Running pretty well
SpeedyJack, May 29 2009
Not just in poker, but in life. It's the little things that are all going my way.
I'm 4 tabling NL5 atm, it's rapidly becoming very easy. Most of the other players play with their hand face up most of the time, I still find a few spots every now and then where I don't know what to do, so I post those here afterward and always get some help.
I think I'm going to move my roll to FTP soon to take advantage of their bonus and rakeback. If anybody who reads this has made a switch from PS to FTP and has anything at all to say I'd love to know what you thought.
I've been playing pretty short sessions lately, I might keep them up and just sprinkle some longer ones in now and then or see if I can make them a little longer, I'll just go by feel.

I'm back for more poker.

I played a lot of poker at the end of 2008, but I stopped a little before Christmas (withdrew most of my bankroll and used it to help buy Christmas gifts for my family and myself). I posted here at the end of November but stopped after getting annoyed by a downswing and forgetting to come back for a while. I didn't play during this semester of school because I was very busy, practice four days a week, lifting three days a week, going to tournaments every other weekend, I really didn't have time for poker. However I have lots of time this summer and I think I'd like to start up again. I left myself a small bankroll, enough for some penny level shenanigans; there I'll try to get my game back and improve on what little ability I had. I've been playing for the last few days a few hundred hands at a time and it feels great.
Nothing substantial to this blog post, just wanted to get in the rhythm of posting them. Take it easy.
Ridiculous fucking downswing

Down 9 BI in just over 1K hands, complete fucking joke of a session, every good flop was a cooler, every KK/AA/QQ would get folded around to PF, suckouts galore, really discouraging.
First 2K hands at .02/.05

Well, I'm really enjoying myself up a limit. It's nice to be somewhere other than the very bottom. I feel like the play is almost exactly the same, my play certainly hasn't changed much except that I find myself calling down people who are spewing chips rather than reraising into them as well as folding to river shoves a bit more. Both of these things should probably hurt NonSD Winnings and help my SD winnings, but I've either been misplaying hands or been unlucky for two-three buyins worth of EV.
The only things that really changed were AF, which I think I might have too small a sample for (or it's actually gone down, I feel a bit more passive and I think it's helped), and fold to 3bet, which is good because I fear I was paying people off too much.
I feel like with a shift from unlucky to averagely lucky I can beat these games rather nicely, I just need to grind it out until then.
I started .02/.05 at ~10K, putting me up about half a buyin. The graph is really confusing to me because the red line is steeper than usual toward the end even though I've been more passive, I guess I've been getting enough in on the flop and turn and hitting something decent on the river and they've folded it.
Comments, criticisms, and replies in general are all read and considered, as a poker player just starting out I really like all of the input I can get.
Cock in this bitch

I was wondering which poker video website I should subscribe to. I understand pokernews strategy has a lot of people from around here, but cardrunners seems to be more well established. I'm down for opinions, as it seems like the advice I could get from these guys would be invaluable.
Thanks
edit: It seems my brother changed the name of the blog.
First 10K hands over
SpeedyJack, Nov 25 2008
I've been running pretty poorly, but also shoving too thin. My showdown winnings have been spiraling down to the negatives recently, as what I believe to be a somewhat equal result of the first sentence. I posted the only hands where I got in way behind and got some great feedback. Basic stats are at 18.8/16/4.5. I've been getting consistently smashed by aces when I go allin pf with KK-QQ and am considering calling threebets instead of shoving pf with KK-QQ, although that won't really change much except perhaps letting me get a read because they show unusual aggression. I'm feeling very comfortable at these limits and 8 tables, and I'm rolled for the next limit so I'm going to take a shot at it, from what I understand it's just as weak as .01/.02 and they play quite similarly.
Without further ado, the spiral graph of doom:
Up to 7K hands now
SpeedyJack, Nov 24 2008
Pretty terrible 2K hands for the most part, seemed like every big pocket pair I got would get zero action. When I hit big it seemed everything I was up against was a cooler (most notably my full boat (pocket queens) running into quads). The last 500 hands weren't terrible, but I still wasn't getting much.
Graph looked something like this:
First 5K Hands + Intro
SpeedyJack, Nov 22 2008
I'm SpeedyJack. I'm a college student and have had an interest in poker for a while now. In the past I played Starcraft and DotA, at average and high levels, respectively. I figured poker would fit my personality nicely, I have a strong attention span and though I'm pretty excitable I don't change moods easily. I decided to commit a bankroll to pokerstars and grind out 10K hands at .01/.02 to get some base numbers and tell if the books I've read and the websites/blogs I've followed were worth anything.
I'm about halfway through and though I've entertained the thought of moving up from .01/.02 I've decided to grind them all out. I've been playing for a little under two weeks and only 5K hands, and as I understand the importance of large sample sizes for meaningful numbers I don't assume anything to be permanent. I have been spewing some chips trying to get a handle on exactly what these people will re-raise me with, but as I continue I don't find any need to call down to know what they have, there are only a couple types of players at this level and I can usually tell by their better patterns (or lackthereof) exactly what they're holding.
My play style is shaping up to be fairly aggressive (21.1/17.7/3.9), but as I said the sample is only 5K hands so that could easily shift a bit. I started off at two tables, but quickly realized I could double that with no ill effects, I now six table and am feeling pretty comfortable, I see no reason I won't be on eight in a short while. I'll post an update at 10K hands before I move up, but if everything continues as it is I'll finish these 10K then play 5K profitably at every level I move up to until my bankroll restricts me (I'm using 30 BI as a baseline number) and then simply grind until I can move up at other levels.
Good luck to all who read.
