looking for a stake
  shaw67193, Jun 04 2007

had to cashout almost my entire roll. after a week of busto, i'm now looking for a stake to play $5-10 sngs on stars/absolute.

here's a graph of my $10+1s on absolute from 05/07-05/28. ended at 33% roi.

i can put in a lot more time now that school + summer course are done with.

testing cash game waters
  shaw67193, May 29 2007

i'm severely underolled for it, but i'm trying to get a feel for the cash games at AP. i've had success with sngs so far (got back on track after a bad run; playing better AND on a slight heater atm).

i just wanted to check a few things that i'm not completely sure of. first off, line check on these two:

http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/202644
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/202210

how often am i against QQ+ here? just random shortstack shove, no reads:
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/202667

last and potentially least....this is standard, i assume:
http://www.liquidpoker.net/h/202654

btw absolute is 200bb max.

note: they also have microlimit blackjack where the min is 10c and the max is $20 (higher levels are 100x minbet for max)...so i've been doing the standard double-bet-after-every-lost-hand and i'm up $20-30 easily. is this sustainable? i already ran into the max bet once and lost, giving me a -$30ish session, but i'm still up overall so idk. i can easily just reset and grind back up when the bet reaches like $6 or something...

ending stake halfway through = +ev
  shaw67193, May 14 2007

---graph removed---

thats a little less than a week's worth of 10+1 sngs on absolute. i also took 10 shots at 20+2, winning 5 of them. on a $150 stake for two weeks, i was sitting on a bankroll of 600+ and asked if i could end early, the guy had no problems. he made a total profit of $345 in 1.5 stakes, so i think he was pleased.

over 68 games, i maintained 41.98% roi, cashed nearly 50% of the time. i'm gonna continue playing sngs for a while. because theyre ez.

stakaments rd2
  shaw67193, May 08 2007

so i finished my first stake. here's the deal.

$150 for two weeks on absolute. i was supposed to (at my own decision) start at $6 sngs and $5 HU. around the 250 mark, i'd move up to 10+1 sngs. what actually happened, however, was that i ran like shit. i bubbled a good 50%, lost the majority of flips and 60/40s, etc.
HU helped maintain some of the br (incl a 12-1 session against one guy, lol), but i was pretty soon down to ~$60. so obv the best choice here was to move up to $10+1 .
long story short, over the last 10 days, i get the br back up. i ended it at $350, netting a $120 profit for my staker and $80 in my pocket. 80% return after only two weeks = good for him, imo. so we decide to restake, now with 50/50 split.

i had two minisessions today, 0/3 in the first, then 3rd, 1st, 1st in the second. i decided to keep track of my stats for this one, so hopefully i get some kind of valuable insight.

so tonight i should be studying for my first of two finals.
instead, i'm playing some stupid donkaments.
the $5 1am $1500 guaranteed went like this:
double up early. fold 31 straight hands. get AKs in sb, face all in from cutoff. decide the range at this level is huge, rrai. bb instacalls. cutoff shows KK, bb shows AA. gg me.

then the $1R 2am $1k guaranteed is like this so far:
first hand double bi all in with KJs manages the ez against A7o for a 4bi stack. then i proceed to get AA 4 times (!) in the next 17 hands. and i hold up 3/3 then steal blinds the 4th time. running goooooot.
the rebuy period ended 15 mins ago, i'm currently 21/178. first takes $326, so i think i'll just win.

jk 17/170 now. hit a set, like 3/5 doing that with limped pp so far.

************edit

i'm trucking this $1R now...1st/33. this raises a good question.
when i asked the staker about getting restaked, i asked about 50/50 split since i figured he'd go for it rather easily...i forgot to mention that i wanted tournaments to be excluded from the stake...i'd pay for them from my own br, but he doesn't get a cut.

of course, now there's a good chance i'll take home >$50 from this $1r...i figure i have three options.

1. tell him about the results, tell him what i meant to propose, see if he goes for it (and maybe still offer a small %)
2. don't tell him and quietly cash out these winnings
3. tell him about the winnings and chop it up, business as usual.

now i know this guy irl, we play in a regular game offcampus at school. the stake and restake were both established fairly casually. we're on good terms (ex when we set up the first stake, i offered 70/30 split in his favor and he countered with 60/40 ), don't hang out outside of poker unless we all go to the diner afterwards or something.
#1 i think is quite viable, he plays much higher limits online, seems like he'd be pretty reasonable about this.
#2 seems shitty on my part, and i'd feel shitty as well. but if i win this, 60% of 326 is a hefty sum. there's always the chance that he finds out, too. all around, seems bad, bad, bad.
#3 would be dumb if i didn't try #1 first.

i guess i'm pretty much settled on #1, then. thoughts?
obv no matter what, we'll figure out something solid for the future afterwards.

and if anyone cares, down to three tables on absolute, the 2am 1500 guaranteed $1R. 1/25.

halfway through a two-week stake from an irl friend on absolute.

i've been playing $10 singles and $5 hu, up ~$70 right now. feeling pretty good, except i have lots of schoolwork i should be doing.

is it worth it to get pokertracker right away if i'm only playing sngs for a while?

poker bloggage
  shaw67193, Mar 21 2007

here's my story.

my name's greg. i'm 20 years old. in my sophomore year at the college of new jersey. i've been playing poker for maybe 3-4 years. i got into online poker when i was like 17. i only really knew the basics of the game. i lost like $200 before i started making money. i had read a bit of doyle, hellmuth, but i didn't really grasp all the concepts of winning poker. for a while i donked my way to success, winning and coming in 2nd in like 4-5 $10-$30 mtts during my senior year of hs. one win was for like $2200 and i was pumped. i spent the summer hitting and running for min-buyin double ups at the UB 2-4 tables. although this is where i eventually went broke, i also developed a lot of confidence in my poker feel; i made some sick sick reads in addition to funamentally poor plays. i remember one weekend a friend and i ran $30 up to $900 that we cashed out sunday night. sick. but i was still a donkey.

i ended up losing a lot. like nearly everything. too much slowplaying, overplaying marginal hands pref, overall donkishness. still, though, poker was my job through hs. then college happened.

without the homegame i became poor as hell. i didn't want to work, so i tried toying with online poker again. i got $1 on stars from a buddy. i won a 3.5k person .10 +$50added tourney. that was mad sick. my game was getting fundamentally better at this point, but even that couldn't prepare me for the next ~6 months of poker.

i found 2 cool guys that lived in my freshman dorm that had a biweekly game on campus. like $10 double-chip-value. i was up a little at first, then one night i set up this LAG player perfectly and got 1-outed for like $80 pot (40 real money). then the next night i got 1-outed again for like $60 pot (30irl).

what felt like forever, i would run into ridiculous badbeats and drawouts. online, too. just absolute redonkalips plays getting paid off by 5-, 3-, 2-outers. it was really a sight to behold. to this day, i still maintain that i get outdrawn the most out of anyone i know. yeah, it sounds like whiny bitchiness, but i don't care. anyone who plays with me regularly will agree.

i got a shitty job at the bookstore at some point. then i got a slightly less shittier job that i still earn some money at occassionally. i hate work :/

so i lose a bunch of online money ($25 here, $50 there) and irl buyins for a while. every once in a while i'd run up to like $200, but there was always something i'd need money for so i'd end up cashing out. until about 2 months ago, i'd really been getting fed up with the beats. like obvi i was playing +ev, i know i wasn't playing perfect at any point, put certainly not losing poker. but without a set br, it was hard to see longterm results. being broke all the time sucked.

so the last ~8 weeks or so, i've been really reevaluating my game. and trying to learn to live with beats a little bit better. i've been pumped to get a br so i can witness + longterm effects rather than badbeat, gg br. i've learned so much about proper br management in the past year, i feel like i've already won something. or some gay shit like that.

i realized liquid is > anysite when it comes to poker discussion. so i've been lurking here a lot more lately. maybe 1 week ago, i started checking out the blogs and found a 200nl video by saki. i was like a little kid watching his first pr0n movie download over dialup. i watched it immediately, and i was blown away...

it was so easy. i was like omfg i could do that. between that and reading about other bloggers' success, i've just been so motivated and ready to stop donking.

so today, i got my friend to transfer $50 on loan at ftp to start grinding (like legit grinding) for the first time in my poker career. again, i have the fine ballas at lp to thank, bc i saw the free ftp bonus thread and was like hey, free $100 bonus, hence transferage.

after some good beats irl, i felt good and jumped on ftp to play $10nl. i found out how +ev multitabling is. i think it singlehandedly fixed my biggest leak, boredom. after ~3hrs, i finished at $79.50 and cleared $8 in bonus. i might go back on for a bit before bed to clear $10 so i can see it in my br.

so right now i feel great.

goals right now:
grind like a fiend
get enough of a br to afford the tracker...i have a spreadsheat to track data but it's pretty much worthless
learn how to use the hand deal so i can put up hands for review/brag/bitch.

guess that's it pokerwise for now.

stealtheblind on aim, drop me a line whenever.
