I have decided to go for sales, pretty much it's a mix between talking to people where I can use the psychology stuff I studied. I worked in finance in a large dull corporation before and it was well... all that the phrase office drone means and this is just so much better on paper (although hard work).

But also It's good for the bottom line and sick fast progression if you work like a madman (going to Managing director with your own branch in 1-2 years is pretty common)

I already got accepted to a purely commission based marketing company that sells broadband door to door and got 2 days long interview and a long phone call for a sick good Norwegian tech company that started 10 years ago and creates software as a service analysis of news, social networks and some other stuff.

Fingers crossed innit; the second one is pretty much flawless and they put a lot of emphasis on fun, and if I want I can point at a country and pretty much go there as they are all over the world and the Edinburgh office has Norwegians, Russians, Canadians and have a sick good portfolio like HP Coca Cola Gucci etc...
Although going into the wild and selling door to door and chatting with so many random people would be just a great thing for social skills and for getting better at chatting up the ladies, I wouldn't mind it either. I had a full day experience and you really meet some weirdos but in general people in Scotland are really friendly to sales people.

Tell me what you think guys. I will put poker on hold for now, especially in the first couple of months when I will need to learn the ropes and get into management and build proper capital ASAP. I got £3k student debt and I want that gone and then put some money into a roll to play on the side, at limits I should be playing if I didn't cash out - NL50-NL100.

Being a door to door salesman isn't a good job and you wont end up doing it for a long time. The only reason why people get into it, at least in USA, is cuz they are told how much money they can make, but in reality it's hard to make that money.

Do whatever makes you happy, but don't expect to last long as a door to door salesman.

i just wanna remark that with door-2-door you will know right away whether youre fit for the job or not. If you arent selling satisfactory amount in the very first week, it's a waste of your time. These kind of people skills you either have already learned or you never will.

yeah, purely commission based door-to-door marketing is the nut-low. afaik all such companies are run by hucksters ("you'll be making X amount of money" "you'll soon have your own branch to lead" and so forth, all bullshit), imo you ought to stay away.

apart from that, even in optimal circumstances door-to-door selling is just not a way to go.

Sales in general is of course another story. Norwegian tech company sounds legit, hopefully you get it.

I would NEVER EVER work a sales job selling door-to-door.

Everyone gets jobs in commission only sales. Its like an open revolving door of people going in and out.
Get a real job with a wage/salary.

If youve been told you can earn the equivelant of even minimum wage at this sales job, its a fucking lie, but they probably tell you youll be earning $75k or whatever - the targets for commission are so bloated you will never hit it. Your psychology degree wont mean shit, as you're usually selling an inferior product. The bulk of sales will be to the lonely, the vulnerable and the uneducated who take your word as gospel.

You will be signing up people to a contract they dont really understand for a product they dont need and cant afford just so you can make some cash for the day.

You can improve your social skills just by going out and meeting people, infact that will improve your social skills a lot more than pretending to be nice to people so you can hopefully sell them something, which is ultimately what you will end up doing.

I did telesales for 2 years, you could pretty much tell if you had a chance of selling based on the persons name. Female Maori, probably unemployed/low income, easy sale. They got dazzled by the sum insured amounts and the "low premiums" and all the bullshit i would feed them, and all i cared about was the $20 commission at the end of it.

Dont confuse a salesman with someone being social, they just want your money.

If you perform really well they wont promote you because youre worth more selling.

Well for me doing it long term obviously isn't something I want to do (pure door to door) long term, but the way I see it yes, they are bullshitting me...some 60%++ (30% at the Norwegian company - they were very open about it unlike the other company) never make it past pure sales, they have super high staff turnover, but I don't care. I don't mind doing it for a couple months in case moving up the ladder is not as easy as they make it sound, just to get my social skills confidence a huge boost - you get to meet so many different people and talk with them see their stories. You get to actually go into their homes for up to 40 minutes, get to know their neighbors (HUGE thing in sales of something everyone has like phone and broadband) and see how they live :O

Yeah true that, what I'd be selling door to door is broadband from Talk Talk, and they sell for Apple and Lovefilm too. The broadband actually is the cheapest in the UK but not fastest and does have some 40GB/mo caps. I expected them to really try to push it onto people but when I was with the guy who does this for some months he just snap left people that were negative at the door or said they are happy now. I know what it is for who it's good etc.
I can't imagine selling e.g. soaps or something I know is crap.
The thing they sell is optimal for some people, and who we sold to were either people who have a fucked up broadband with another company (broadband companies love to overload their hubs so I have some 2000ms pings in peaks lol) or are just completely mental like e.g this 60y old hard worker lady who paid $160 for broadband and TV every month lol.

The tech company is just completely different, they sell something that is new and I know companies really need and that can save them money - I know if I'm a director I'd want to have a service that pulls data from all news from various languages, and to be able to monitor e.g. activity and tone of mentions on social networks which is what the company does. I'm just surprised they weren't snatched by MIcrosoft or Google or News corp yet :O
And unlike the door to door it's actually Base Salary AND Commission.

33k wow
Although it is not uncommon here either. I just didn't take a loan at all and paid my uni by working, some money from family and from poker. I just have an overdraft at the bank that should be gone in a year after graduating. Sick brag

And no doubt, this is not for everyone;
I met two guys that do it - one was very sincere, didn't have trouble telling people not to switch and mention competitors, because he knew when their broadband brokes down two months down the line they will remember him and give him a call.
The other one was just master bullshitter, making up stories and had very 'unorthodox' methods from what I heard.

I will try to be closer to the first one (they had similar results )

I don't even think it's allowed here, going on door to door and try and sell shit.

I don't think it's ever happened to me before, oh at least since I've become an adult, once when I was a kid, like 18 years ago, these religious people came, I was on the 2nd floor balcony. My immedieate reaction, was "WAIT!!" and I ran and filled a pot of water, and threw at them, and I yelled "GET OFF, or I CALL COPZ" (wasn't that old).

Feeling my heartrate go up, wondering wtf they were trying to do.

Alot of crazy ppl in this world lol
