This is probably worth its own thread as it could open up a discussion, but I'm just going to post this here as a recommendation.
It's a fairly old TEDTalk iirc, but it has just been re-uploaded today. I watched it again and I realize how "paradigm-shifting" (for lack of a better term) this can be for some. In his words: "people don't know this about themselves, and not knowing this can work to our supreme disadvantage." Of course, if you are familiar with ancient philosophy, whether it is from the East or the West, this won't be news to you - you will realize that they knew all about this 'synthetic happiness' and fully understand why they built disciplines around it. But whether you do or don't, it's really interesting to see some data about it, and this scientist has an overall great talk on the subject. Enjoy.

(And this one I use for training, haven't found any better on Youtube, at least that's consistent, he keeps making new video's quite frequent, so going with this for now lol). http://www.youtube.com/user/sixpackshortcuts
I read the first 3 chapters then I stopped because reading from a monitor sucks. Will continue tomorrow probably. I lolled at the negro references (such different times) and the card game parts like this one:
"Hence, in all countries the
chief occupation of society is card-playing, and it is the gauge
of its value, and an outward sign that it is bankrupt in thought.
Because people have no thoughts to deal in, they deal cards,
and try and win one another’s money. Idiots!"
^He is commenting on boredom lol
A very good read so far, a ton more useful/stimulating than the OP video, but I guess videos are more easy to watch and you probably predicted 3 comments max if you just given the link to the book =)
also, wtf @ the lsd posts RikD XP

heroin is the worst thing ever for serotonin. it's good for dopamine tho so long as you dont use it too much.

That card game quote used to be my quote on here, lol.
Yeah of course the video doesn't compare to Schopenhauer, but since most people on here are very scientifically-minded it's perfect I think. I've linked to the book a few times on here already tho. Reading on a monitor does suck, but if you use f.lux it's much better. But in this day and age everyone should own an e-reader. I got a Kindle recently since they are really cheap and I own hundreds of e-books, really worth it.

re: loco above
kindle screen is better than good monitor + h.flux? elaborate please?
re: lebowski
that was just some abstract poetry on how i was feeling at the time re: video posted. re-reading it in a sober consciousness it actually makes perfect sense to me but understandable if it makes no sense for anyone else. obv imo but there are some gems in there to think about/try for sure though.
was hoping to stimulate some discussion.
key point being:
internet is a great place for rountable socratic method discussion on subjects like these. much larger and diverse yet focused crowd than the local starbucks or watering hole as well as anyone can communicate at their leisure and their positions/ideas aren't lost.
but as far as youtube and internet info on this subject i've found it much better to just hit up classic existential philosophy and literature.
then just added a lot of probably hard to understand lines about things i think would improve everyone's life.
It's definitely better. It uses "e-ink" and it looks just like real paper to me. It's also about the feeling, and the feeling of reading on a monitor sucks. Holding something in your hands, turning a page (even if its virtually) vs using a mouse feels better. The basic Kindle is dirt cheap, too.
