I'm flying out next week and will be spending the week in Vegas staying at the Aria. However my main motivation in doing this isnt to play poker. I'm actually scouting Vegas as a city to live in based on the following factors:

1) I hate my job
2) Bored living in "The South"
3) Ridiculously good prices on Vegas homes
4) Proximity to California
5) Live poker scene
6) Front-runner for legalized online poker

I know the job market in Vegas is described as "terrible", but I think a lot of that depends on what you do for a living. Regardless, I plan to get a job first, and move out second just to be on the safe side obviously. I'm hoping Vegas will offer many more levels of enjoyment in life than South Carolina will.

With all that being said, since I'll be there for a week, can anyone recommend some things to do & see for a prospective resident? I dont mean bars and concerts and stuff, I'm sure I'll get my fill of entertainment on the strip alone. But rather what are some of the prime neighborhoods I should drive through to get a taste of vegas lifestyle? I dont mean the insanely high-end stuff, but places where one can reasonable expect to live paying $200k for a house. Where are the shopping districts that most locals visit?

Stay away from North-Northeast and central areas around the strip for houses.

Places I would look at:
Strip
The condos on the strip are nice and pretty affordable from what I've heard. Seems that everyone has a place in Panorama or City Center for <2k/mo. But renting > buying there bc HOA fees are like 500-600/mo

Southeast
Henderson/Green Valley are older, more developed areas of Vegas where pretty much anywhere that you move is going to be close to shopping/food, and you are only 20min or so from the strip.

Northwest
Summerlin. Although it's a little farther from the strip than Henderson (25min versus 15-20), it's also a little newer than the Henderson area. There are some nice communities near Red Rock Casino which is right on the 215 beltway where there are probably some pretty good prices on housing, and the casino itself gets 2/5NL off every day, so living next to it and playing part-time there would be pretty nice. Plus the casino itself has a lot of things to do inside of it. Movie theater/restaurants/golf course/bowling alley.

Southwest
Pretty much everything in the Southwest is a lot newer than everything else in Vegas. Mountain's Edge is a Masterplanned community like henderson and summerlin, but it was being built right when the housing crash happened, so a lot of the area is just now being built up again. There is a lot of construction, but I think you can get some great deals on houses and new constructions in the area. This is the part of town that I live in, so I'm a little biased. It's 20min from the strip, but you can find some nice houses that are just outside of Mountain's Edge and closer to the strip/I-215.

Here's a map of the areas I'm talking about. Summerlin top left, Henderson bottom right, and I circled the southwest in green.

What I would suggest if you are going to drive around and look at places would be something like this route:
(click map to go to the googlemap with the driving directions)

That route will take you from Aria around the southwest and up past redrock casino and back around through summerlin back to Aria via surface streets.

Then you just look up some places online that you might be interested in around your price range and see what the neighborhood is like. When you're in the southwest there are loads of signs leading to communities with model homes and prices to look at so it's pretty easy out here at least to shop. Not sure about summerlin and henderson because I don't go there much. I would do Henderson another day because its pretty much its own city as you can see by its size on the map.

Hope that helps

Wow, thank you so much, that is exactly everything I needed to help plan for this trip. If I'm crazy enough to sit at a 5/10 table with you, I will fold to your 3bets, and let you steal my blinds.

wh00sel covered Summerlin and Southwest pretty well. I'm biased towards Henderson. The other thing worth checking out is Fremont Street. It's not exactly a nice area as venturing off the street will result in encounters with drug addicts and shady seeming people, but there are apartments and the Ogden still within the safe zone. There's casinos and plenty of food places, shopping, all within walking distance. Also it's the focus of the $350M Downtown Project lead by Zappos CEO. Depending on what your hobbies are outside of poker it could be a good fit since it's very tech and art oriented.
