2013 Mazdaspeed3

I've been doing some financial soul searching after being inspired by wh00sel's blogs the last few months, and figured if he can pull the trigger and ditch the GTR for an econo-crapbox with his financial status, surely I can too. Right now I drive a 2012 Mustang GT and absolutely love it (save for the fact that I'm a tiny bit bored of it, but thats just my short attention span). I could flat out save 50% of all car expenses by down-sizing to something like the Fit. Problem is I dont think I've quite achieved the mental maturity yet to let go of the "fun car" part of me like wh00sel did and still require something that well, quite frankly looks good.

Thats where the speed3 comes in. Personally I think it's beautiful. It's a sports-hatch. The idea is to be the Honda Fit on steroids. This thing can actually keep up with my 5.0. Has perfectly respectable racing characteristics, and has more then enough power for daily driving since it's not like I race my car every day. It's cheaper, saving me maybe $100/month, and offers one critical piece of hardware that I've been sorely lacking with the stang, and that's cargo room. Now the mustang actually has a shockingly good amount of cargo space. I can fit 2 huge ass suitcases in the trunk for extended travel purposes, it has 2 surprisingly comfortable back seats, and the interior is very roomy and comfortable. The speed3 of course has 10x more of all of this.

Now I'm pretty heavily invested in the mustang. I did the tablet thing (I upgraded to a nexus 7 and cleaned up the cutlines, been meaning to shoot some new video of it), and was going to blow christmas funds on a new exhaust and engine/transmission tune. Plus there's all the money that I've spent so far maintaining the thing. I'm almost to the point where I'm kinda pot committed with it if you know what I mean, so my trade would probably be totally unnecessary. I mean I'd like the extra carrying capacity of the speed3, but I've managed this far without it, I'm sure I can continue.

But thats not the point. What do you guys think of this fucking car?

sounds like you want justification for your enthusiast car mentality. If you have little chance of future income growth then you are completely wasting money and screwing yourself long term. If your income is only going up then this car anxiety you are beginning to feel is moot.

Sounds like even if you get a mazda you will throw enthusiast upgrades, so jumping ship will only waste more money if you bought a brand new car. You should keep this mustang for at least 8 years. They now have good respectable gas mileage and safety.

The 1 caveat being, you should post your car for sale on sites for a ridiculous overpriced sum for the off chance a fish comes along drooling over your mods

The car looks nice, but you didn't give any specifications on it, aside from it being roomy and stuff.

You should go to the manufacturer website and collect all the info, like gas mileage/speed/cost/etc., and post it here so we know what we're dealing with.

Right now we're just going off of this car vs. a mustang, and that this car has more room.

Yeah thats all I kinda need input on. I already have the details and have done the math and I'd be coming out ahead something like $35/month when you take into consideration restarting a new car loan. The immediate savings would be about $100/month or so, which is kinda meh so thats why I'm really just focused on things like cargo space and having a family car that I'm still in love with.

I mean if you want to know it's something like this:

- Mazda -
Cost: $24,000 out the door
Gas: 18/26 premium
Speed: 0-60 in 6.0s. 1/4 mile in 14s.

- Mustang -
Cost: $36,000 out the door
Gas: 18/26 premium
Speed: 0-60 4.7s. 1/4 mile 13.1s.

Like I said the savings are minor, almost trivial at this point since there's probably some things that wont materialize until after ownership. But the more I think about it the more I realize that until I actually have a family where i NEED the room, there's no sense in buying the car now. It's not like I need to futureproof myself so that 5 years later I already have a good family sedan. Just buy the fucking sedan when the time comes. I guess I was sorta thinking along the lines of "it'd be nice to have it paid off when I start to take advantage of the utility".

I really do like my car. Hmm. Yeah I think I'll just keep it, have some more fun with upgrades, and drive it like I stole it.

Browsing through your hand histories makes me wonder that you might not be aware these games are possibly play money. Have you ever tried to cash out? - Kapol

if you really need the room there are surely third options, you aren't capped to either mustang or mazda
To me this mazda looks pretentious, trying to be something it is not. And not very pretty for my eyes.
I suggest looking at third options but i can't really give exact makes and models to look for. Get a few more cars in the mix and create a poll

w00t, blog mentions ftw . If you go about getting this car I would look at 2010's not 2013's. From the minimal googling I did it looks like the 2010 is the start of the second generation of this car so it would be the same car, but someone else would have eaten the "new car cost" for you. I saw one on craigslist in my area for 16.5k with 14k miles, pretty much brand new for probably 10k less than what you'd pay at a dealer, plus no sales taxes since it's not at a dealer which could save you a decent amount depending on your state; something to think about. If you're worried about getting the loan for it, your bank will likely approve you for a vehicle loan from a private party, just have to approach them about it. Most people just take the dealer financing, but you can usually get a much better deal through your own bank or credit union.

Also, for your savings calculations, I'm sure insurance is significantly cheaper with the mazda over the mustang in addition to the 20k difference in price (if you go for the 2010 over the 2013). Seems like a no-brainer for how close the two cars are in specs. I like the mazda 3 in general, but like some other people said, mods are going to be tempting...gl with your decision. I'm sure you'll be happy either way, but I'd take slightly less immediate satisfaction for 20k :-P

Yeah my credit union is great about loans. They basically just look up NADA value and the VIN of your car and if it's worth more than what you're asking, you get the loan (with good credit, which I have). True about the 2010 differences. The 2013 is really just a bunch of cosmetic upgrades that you could piece together one by one I suppose. I think all 2013's come with build in bluetooth streaming now, so it's just a bunch of small stuff like that which I'd want already taken care of in a new car. I took my g/f for a test ride in one and she hated it so much she practically begged me to keep the stang. Thanks for your help though, it didnt go to waste. I actually test drove a Fit 3 times and once with her in it lol. I'm still just a little too gun-shy about losing leather/soundproofing and other luxury features at the moment for an all plastic car.

I love my mustang, wouldn't trade it for the world. It does cost a pretty penny to fuel though, and insurance is quite high. IMO keep mustang if you love it ditch it for a cheap car if you don't. My grandfather said you might as well drive something you love, that way you will take care of it (and it will last longer). Longer lasting car will save money INTL, but if you end up saving the difference in gas/insurance I guess it is a wash either way.

I have a 2012 rmazda3 s sedan. I love it. It's fairly sporty, fun to drive, has a nice interior/sound system, really nice transmission and it was fairly inexpensive. I've heard the speed3 is actually pretty nice sleeper car, if you're into racing. It'll definitely handle better than a mustang, but who cares about turning amirite?
