Sigh. So I finished January +34,040. I know this would normally be a celebratory post but to know that I won 56k in one day and lost 22k spread out over all the other days, it's hard to feel like a winner. Feels sorta like I'm gambling and randomly got lucky one day. Never really felt like this before.

Lost like 19k on the last day of the month, realized I got back to taking too many norcos again and that it again was affecting my play. Obviously have been trying to detox myself from those since that day and have been taking a few days off. Good thing I've had other stuff to take my mind off of it lately. Hopefully that continues.

I've probably been playing more than a few guys HU who have an edge over me lately. Easy to tell since I lost a grip to a few specific people while playing HU and had a general overall win from the rest of my games. I'm just not as good as some people and the higher I try to play HU vs guys who will play anybody, the more money I feel I'm likely to lose. Am I improving? Yes, but I don't think I'm improving enough to justify shot taking @ 10/20 and 15/30 vs players better than me. I need to keep those shots vs those guys at 5/10 from now on. That's the adjustment I'm making for next month and the rest of the year. Just barely on pace for my goal of earning 400k for the year so that's a good thing. Guess we'll see what happens next month and those to follow.

Ye not easy to find a good balance between improving by playing better players and building BR at the same time.
You seem to be a very low volume player, there is an easy fix in playing lower stakes when you can autopilot and have a good winrate anyway in times you don't feel like playing and taking shots at better players when you're at the top of your game. That way you never have to be afraid playing good players because you know your BR will catch up by playing the lower stakes. But that's only if you aspire to play higher/be the best. You seem to be good enough to have a great life with low volumes, if you are happy with that there's no reason to stress just play enough good players to avoid getting worse

ya i think youre right but the problem is cuz im an american player it's so important for me to keep my BR up enough at each site to be able to play the highest 6m games when they run. except, playing lower stakes to maintain a winrate would actually turn me into a high volume player which i want to avoid at all costs. if im gonna be a high volume player, i might as well move out of the country and grind 30-35 hours a week (which would be an incredible amount for me given how much focus it would take. it would push me to my limits, that's for sure--ya i know a lot of u guys already play that much and i could easily if i auto piloted a ton, but im talking about being highly focuses and concentrated for 35 hrs/wk vs what how focused/concentrated i am now for ~15-20 hrs/wk which is much less intense.)

i dropped 25k at WPN the other day which dropped my BR there even below the threshold of being able to play 6m 5/10nl without severely adjusting my strategy towards very low variance in order to continue to attain a reasonable winrate type style. its a mistake that's without question going to cost me to struggle in the long run. for this year. was a big mistake for me cuz any increase in skill is never going to be big enough to offset the money i can make playing in the higher stakes 6m games that run there.

I wouldn't have expected to read such a reflected blog entry from you, judging about your curses against Leatherass and Rekrul.
Well, keep it up!

winning the kind of money im winning on a regular basis ... u should probably assume there's a lot more going on underneath the surface than what u might assume based on a few posts about things here and there.

winning a lot of cash doesn't make a good character, look at wobbly.

i think youre underestimating variance. every time you win you think you had a big edge and when you lose you are a worse player than your opponent. swings are unavoidable and its very possible that a guy you have beaten for 10+ buyins may be better than you and guys you have lost 10 buyins to you will beat in the long run

i definitely think that's true, but, i also think that everytime i look at a showdown i can tell how much of an edge i could or could not potentially have against a dude based on what he showed down and how he played his hand.

i can be down 10 buy ins to a dude i know im gonna crush and i can also be down 10 buy ins to a dude where im not even sure how im gonna end up beating the guy in the long run cuz he isn't playing any hands worse than me and im not sure if im playing any hands better.
