Goal:

As someone who works 80+ hours a week regularly where there's a direct correlation to progress and success based on the level at which I'm able to maintain concentration and get things done I'm looking to optimize brain use.

Proposed:

-Exercise a few times a week and on all days when not taking any other substances
-Caffeine no more than once every 3 days (the half-life is about 5.5 hours, and not looking for any dependence or withdrawal symptoms)
-Modafinil no more than once every 3 days (the half-life is 12 hours, but no dependence, just looking for full effect when taking it so want a full day without it in my system)
-Nicotine. Psychologically I feel like it's better to just limit usage to one day every few to ward off addiction, but because the half-life (2 hours) is so short and it could be taken multiple times that day it could still be troublesome. This is the one I'm most worried about because of addictive properties and withdrawal symptops when addicted. If the negatives outweigh the positive or I do get addicted, I'll have to cut it out.
-A nootropic supplement every day (currently Focus Formula)

So over first two weeks it would look like
Day 1: 30 minutes aerobic exercise; 80-100mg caffeine
Day 2: 150mg modafinil
Day 3: 30 minutes aerobic exercise; 2mg nicotine
Day 4: 80-100mg caffeine
Day 5: 30 minutes aerobic exercise; 150 mg modafinil
Day 6: 2mg nicotine
Day 7: 30 minutes aerobic exercise
Day 8: 80-100mg caffeine
Day 9: 30 minutes aerobic exercise; 150 mg modafinil
Day 10: 2mg nicotine
Day 11: 30 minutes aerobic exercise; 80-100mg caffeine
Day 12: 150 mg modafinil
Day 13: 30 minutes aerobic exercise; 2mg nicotine
Day 14: 80-100mg caffeine
Day 15: 30 minutes aerobic exercise

Data:

I've been doing something very similar to what I'm proposing above for the past few weeks, so I do have a little data to go off of.

I'll keep track of everything that's easily trackable each day along with any notes I have. I have a few EEG headsets, so I'll try to capture a bunch of my brain data as well to hopefully find a bit more substantial evidence that certain drugs have higher correlations with sustained concentration.

I also keep track of my sleep and have over a year's worth of data to compare to so I can see if there are any changes there.
I eat 4-5 meals a day and will try to keep track of that as well.

I welcome any constructive feedback or other peoples' results having done similar experiments.

you have to stay focused 11 hours a day? thats really hard, my theory is that caffeine etc work in short term if you want to stay focused and you are in a middle of a hard project but long term its just the same as to taking nothing or maybe even worse if you are not careful.

Yeah, I don't understand why you forcing scheduled regimens of caffeine, nicotine, etc. Of course almost all of us take some caffeine when we feel tired, why not take some then? What if you're wide awake and its time to take it on your schedule, do you still take it? Also nicotine shouldn't be taken unless you're quitting smoking, are you trying to quit?

I think the best think by far is to eat healthy. Lots of fruits and veggies. After that it's sleep and exercise.

I used to take Focus Formula, it's ok. Piracetam+choline would probably be better.

i do what you do in 15 days in 1. wtf @ 2mg nicotine.

the most important thing in concentration/motivation/mood is sleeping the full 7 hours every night without waking.

Also l-theanine is a really good supplement to counter the negative effects of caffeine such as nervousness, figgity, etc and also enhancing the focus caffeine gives you.

Luhos: I'll adjust accordingly, but caffeine can give enhanced performance regardless of tiredness. Also I don't and have never smoked.

Stim_Abuser: I've looked into piracetam and I don't really like the side effects listed. I may do some further research on it after I've tried this out for a few months. Choline-specific products usually make me vomit.

julep: I sleep average 6.5 hrs a night with 2 hrs of REM and 1.5 hrs of deep so my sleep is extremely healthy.

I'd like to note that I've been working 80+ hours/week for probably 5 years now and don't see that changing anytime soon. It's not that I have difficulty concentrating well or getting a lot done, it's that I'm pretty sure I can do even better.

What side effects? Piracetam is considered amongst the safest nootropics with very few side effects. Been around since the 70's.

You could always just eat eggs, as they have a pretty good amount of choline.

Nothing he's taking is really unhealthy for him, other than the nicotine. If he's taking his caffeine in the form of black coffee it's actually pretty healthy for you, lowers your risk of colon cancer by a good amount.

You might be getting Piracetam mixed with one of the other racetams (usually ani- and oxi-) which although safe it seems that people tend to react negatively more often to them. The most common side effect I ever see reported after Piractem use are usually headaches resulting from a lack of choline. And like Stim said you can just eat eggs (although you have to like eggs as it takes 4-5 to get 500mg). You could try Noopept which I have switched to (easier to get than Piracetam in Australia). You could also try ALCAR, Ginko, Creatine and fish oil. The stack I use is a pretty standard one.

You could check out Longecity for more info.

I use to take alot of nootropics. I couldn't even tell the differences while on them or off them.. it cost me a few hundred for a few months; waste of money / big scam IMO. I even tried nicotine patches at one point haha

I remember reading good things about modafinil, but it's no magic drug. stronger than caffeine, and weaker than real ADD meds, with little side effects. I use to take stuff like concerta for my ADD while playing poker; but the side effects made me quit.

If anything you should focus on just eating healthy, exercising and sleeping right. People are always looking for shortcuts...

taking caffeine and modafinil Isn't a "brain hack" lol

I dont know what a dt drop is. Is it a wrestling move? -OlyLast edit: 18/05/2013 17:11

reminds me of the days when I'd browse TL and play starcraft

noobs would look for edges through buying an expensive mouse, thinking it'll make them play better.

Do you have any studies / data to support the frequencies/volumes you chose? Specifically caffeine 80-100mg 2x / week
