Some shit went down with my sister. Her BF sold drugs, is a felon, and had guns, until the cops came with a search warrant. The house isn't getting taken away, and my sister can't get a job since she's pregnant. So, I've offered to host a home game twice a week over there. I want to do a 20/10 rebuy followed by 1/2 cash then a 50/20 rebuy followed by 2/5 cash, after having been up for a while, at least, but I'm not sure.

Anyone ever hosted their own games before? Any tips?

I don't think I would be excited to bring my money to an armed drug dealer's house, and I don't want to sound judgmental but your sister sounds like a mess and I think she needs more than just money.

Well, the cops took the guns and the drugs. And I don't think anyone's going to be told the history of the house. And I'm not going to be giving my sister the money just straight out, but yes, she does need a lot of help. You have no idea.

However, the house does have a camera security system.

Just from going to home games, its really hard to get a cash game going after a tournament unless the tournament had a lot of people in it to begin with. As people bust out they don't want to sit around and wait for the tourney to get over with b4 they get to start playing cash so they just leave. Pretty much ever home game that ive been to that was supposed to be tourney followed by cash ended up just being the tourney no cash.

Exactly. Tourneys suck, especially home tourneys. Just host your 1/2 cash game. Buy some food (pizzas, asian, BBQ, whatever) and stock the fridge with soda and beer (make sure to buy cup holders that cant fit on the table). Hopefully you have an actual poker table.

Some of the games here attract players with things like high hand jackpots. Others attract players with rounds of omaha between holdem and such. But for the most part all anybody wants is a full table.

Cash > Tourneys in homegames. Also get a safe + from the two people I've known to host cash homegames (ranging from 200-1K NL) They've been robbed at least once and the cops busted one and when they do they take all the cash.

How much money do you think you'll be able to make from these homegames? I would say there is probably a better route to take.

The way I had the tourneys planned, it would be over in two hours. (i would think) I would start 100/200 with 10k to start, 15 minute blinds, break after an hour, then 10 minute blinds with antes. If I had a full table of ten, for a 20 game, I'd come out with at least 120. For a game of 1/2, I'd think that at least 5 "tips" per hand would be a good base to start assuming from before my first game, so I was thinking at least 10/hr for the cash game. I'd try to run it for up to eight hours, but would probably average 5-7.

120 plus 50 then times that by 2.5 for the bigger game, times four, and that comes about 2k a month.

I have thought of what kind of bonuses I want to do. I thought about doing if you get a set, then you get a 20 bonus in the cash, but you can only get a set once for each number. (a set of sevens means no more sets of sevens, but the twelve other sets are still live)

The safe seems like a good idea, plus I think I may be armed with some sort of weapon at least, and then we would have the camera system, so I would see anyone coming up, and then how the doors and windows are, there's no way anyone could force their way into the house.

just do 1/2NL cash, 100-300 buy like the Borgata and rake it $5 max, 10%, and do promotions that entice people to stay later, i.e highest hand by 2am gets $100 or w/e. Making it a set amount and not taking extra money out for promotions is the best way imo. Games that take jackpot rake have to basically announce that they have a large amount of extra money and that makes a game much more likely to be robbed (either by insiders or people who've heard about it) from my experience. The best way is to just do it once per week and not get greedy. Keep the fridge stocked with free drinks and snacks and if everyone stays late order a pizza or something easy. Also make sure to have a dealer or w/e but I guess that's obvious. Don't let people play with cash on the table and make sure it's not obvious that the game is being raked. It's not illegal in most places to play poker for money, but it is illegal to profit from it as the house, so just take that into consideration.

yeah you sound like you are trying to over complicate this shit, just keep it simple. 1/2 cash game at live stakes means every hand is probably being raked the max of $5. If you get 30 hands an hour thats $150/hr, $1000 per night, do the math. The dealers for the biggest live game here said he raked 250k last year, running 24 hours a day from Friday-Sunday. Just provide food and water and the fish will come.

I just found out what a kill button is. After a predetermined amount of consecutive wins from a single player, the next hand's blinds are doubled. I would think this would generate some extra action. After a player has won x-1 amount of times, they may try to bluff or players may think they are trying to bluff them. There would also be more money in the middle to start out with. Though, would it make things too complicated?

don't bother with kill. it's a no limit game. i'd be flexible with the buyin cap on a no limit home game as well that would generate more action any anything really.

no tournies, cash only, rake it...profit.

I go to a well run 2/5 homegame 1x a week and it's a nice uncapped 2/5 (most of the time unless we have a nitty old guy whining about the buyin caps) and they serve drinks (non alcoholic to keep things level) and they serve even a home cooked meal...wouldn't really recommend that unless you got someone willing to do that week in and out and is a good cook obvs.

a raked game is the nuts no doubt.

With the kill, I was thinking of having whoever posts it get to act last pre flop. Triggers would be 2 consecutive wins or if you win a 20 pot. Then, if you keep winning, you keep keeping it, or if someone wins a 40 pot on a kill pot, then they get it. I was also going to do a bonus either for winning 40 on the kill pot or winning two consecutive kill pots or something.

I'll be getting a bunch of frozen meals, little pizzas, burritos, etc,. and the drinks for sure. There'll also be a T.V. so people can watch their sports or whatever.

Though, one thing I'd like to know is how many chips should I have for a 1/2? I was thinking maybe 4k.

I have some ideas to run private games in Toronto... Host using airbnb, bring the table/details all last minute, switch places every week, pay using e-transfers, have a in-game-prop-fish who gets a cut for bringing in his donk friends.
