So I'm about to apply for a position as a prop player for a local casino. The casino is about 10 minutes away and I plan on it being my main source of income until I finish my nursing classes. I will probably be playing mostly 3/6, 4/8 limit holdem, and 4/8 limit omaha hi-lo, with some 2/5 nl holdem. I have been told by a recent hire that the pay is 9$ + 15$, so basically 24$/hr while you're playing and probably 9$/hr while you're just waiting around.

I'm currently a part time personal trainer that get's paid 18$/hr + commission but kinda getting burnt out/tired of the job even though I love fitness and gains.

Would you guys go for the job? Do you see yourself being a slight winner, break even, or slight losing playing in a limit format? Is it reasonable to expect making 2bb's/hr on top of the hourly so basically 32$ ish per hour?

Rake at 3/6 and 4/8 limit is probably insanely high. But I imagine it's beatable because the players will be terrible, at least from my limited experience with those stakes live.

But yea man... definitely got for it, and see how it works out.

I guess that depends how much money you have/need and how good you are those games. 18/hr+commission isn't far from 24$/hr and 9$/hr waiting. Can your living situation handle swings if they were to arise, X buy-ins? If you think you have a clear edge on the games, I say go for it! You gotta love your job in life. Can you do part-time in both?

It's great as long as you continue with studies and do well. Poker is definitely a great tool for something different you also want to attain. It's definitely the easiest job you can find making more money than most, but it's the lousiest if you think long term

Guys around here will tell ya, you play for a living, it's like any other job. You don't gamble, you grind it out. Your goal is to win one big bet an hour, that's it. Get your money in when you have the best of it. Protect it when you don't. Don't give anything away. That's how I paid my way through half of law school. A true grinder. You see, I learned how to win a little at a time. But finally I've learned this: if you're too careful, your whole life can become a fuckin' grind.

if poker is dangerous to them i would rank sports betting as a Kodiak grizzly bear who smells blood after you just threw a javelin into his cub - RaiNKhAN

Put a guy like me in a weak game like that, the cards themselves hardly matter. A fish acts strong, he's bluffing, acts meek, he has a hand.

You keep grinding out that rent money, Joe. It's noble work you're doing.

i was a prop before at my local casino for 20$ an hour. i did quit after a while because they kept putting me in 1/2 games when i wanted to play 2/5. you basically sit around and do nothing if there are people playing and then when there isnt they send you to whatever tables needs players.

it did feel kinda cool for a bit to have structure in my life getting up and going "work" each day. But then you do lose that freedom to come and quit whenever you want.

I would say if your starting out in need of a bankroll boost and are a good enough player go for it. A lot of prop players go bust after while. the really tight ones i say try to be break even and live off the "rakeback" basically.

160$ a day is still pretty good compared to other jobs if you can be break even.

the rake is roflmao insane. they have to find a way to pay all the props some how. 5 dollars every flop seen was at my casino. you would see some pots where people were playing for 2 dollars after 5 of the 7 was taken. beating the rake + tipping dealer is going to be the biggest problem. any 1/2nl or 3/6limit game you are just going to be playing for rakeback essentially

games running = casino printing money, so some casinos pay prop players an hourly to start/keep games running.
