So yesterday was my last day in the hidden poker mecca known as Jacksonville FL. The only new thing I got to do tonight was spend 8 hours waiting for a fish to donate $400 to me that never came. I eventually retired from hunger and called it quits. Still had a few lolworthy moments where I bet $200 into a $75 pot and got tank called, so on and so forth. It feels so unnatural not to balance yet the more I get used to it the easier poker seems. "Like really? I just tell you how much money I want you to give me, and you do it?" Fascinating how live fish have not even considered what the implications of pot odds are. The only time I hear the term is when someone raises $40 pre, gets 1 call, and the BB says he has to come along too, heh.

So where does this leave me? A dead end job that I'm seriously thinking about putting in my 2 weeks notice with. I have 40k in available credit card debt should I have to let my expenses/rent ride and a healthy skillset to land a new job if things get really bad. Should I do it? Should I make the move?

Lifetime earnings since I began tracking in November: $8000 @ 256 hours. What could possibly go wrong? :D :D :D

Day1: -$40
Day2: $970
Day3: $190
Day4: -$1700
Day5: -$1420
Day6: $635
Day7: $2850
Day8: $740
Day9: $400
_____
Total: $2625

Was a cool experience to ready about. Glad you profited. I feel like a lot of times where I tried to balance against fishy players I've missed out on some big profitable opportunities. The comments and discussion in your blogs day by day have made me rethink some things regarding live poker.

Talking about credit card debt shows me you are not ready. Just play local live with a job and re-evaluate in a few months. Don't start this without at least 15k behind of real money. Shouldn't take you long with a job/local poker.

And 15k is probably agressive/modest.

Just don't into the 'I'll put it on the credit card' seems like the worse idea.

not credit line gambling

pls trust

It seems to be not very profitable in the long run to play those kind of hands. - Gus Hansen

Is moving to Jacksonville, getting a job there and slowly transitioning out of it towards live poker (or just playing it on the side and see where that gets you) an option? That's what I would try to do if I were you.

Don't just up and quit with such small capita behind you. You will regret it. Good luck!

My favourite line is Bet/Fold. I bet, you fold.

+1 When you have a big downswing with CC debt it'll likely cause a ton of stress.

I dont know what a dt drop is. Is it a wrestling move? -OlyLast edit: 15/09/2015 14:44

Well I think the key thing is to just move first. It's hard to land a job in a foreign city if you dont live there for repeated interviews. So if I relocate unemployed, the first thing I'd do is just hit the card rooms. If I go on an instant downswing then yeah I gotta find a job. If however if just keep profiting each week I figure I might as well do nothing but play. The problem with doing both is simply the schedule. I cant play from 7pm-3am and work a day job at the same time. If I get a job first what I predict will happen is that I'll only play 1-2 times per week, probably on the weekends, failing to maximize my potential. If I go on a downswing I'll freak out and just quit all together and try again months later, kinda like I do now. I feel like I need to sort of thrust myself into a sink or swim scenario. If I have a bad week fuck it, keep grinding. The credit cards are just an emergency safety net in case I've just been a fish on a heater. If I run up a bunch of high interest debt that I have difficulty paying off then I'll lower expenses, get a roomate, etc and rebuild.

Thing is, I almost feel like having a job might be more of a gamble than playing poker now. I've reached a point where I just dont give a fuck anymore, thanks largely in part to me feeling I'm so close to going pro. As a result I'm neglecting tons of work duties, the kind that will eventually get me fired when it catches up to me and executives wonder what the fuck I've been doing all this time. It's like I'm dead man walking here. Of course I could turn it all around, but that effort would be better spent towards poker where I have ambition and am still fresh.

256 hours at 25 hands per hour, congrats, you played the same amount of hands of what most people here used to in a day. Variance still exists even if your edge is hilariously huge by online standards. Set yourself up in a situation where you can grow your bankroll from you winnings, not just have it constantly go towards bills

Let me give you an idea: I've grossed just under 8k since last April live. in 1447 hours or about $5.50 a hour. In the same time frame I grossed about $14k online in 194hours on a local site. Maybe I'm not as good as I can be, or maybe your live game is softer than my samples, but that still gives you an idea of what variance can do to your bottom line (working assumption is that my local live game is same level of soft as my local online site)

No I get it, it's just that 1447 hours is the equivalent of playing 4 hours a night, 7 days a week, for a straight YEAR, which is simply not realistic for home games, and even if I could play that much, I would have to assume I would pull at least $20,000 out of these games in the process. One way or another I have to put myself where the card rooms are.

I say go for it as long as you don't have anyone else relying on you for money (wife, kids, etc...). If the worst that can happen is you go broke and have to find a job so be it.

Edit: Although I guess I would add that you should do some serious work controlling tilt. From previous blog posts it seems you like you struggle with that. The stress of variance playing live without a massive BR can be enough to drive people crazy on its own. Add tilt issues to this and it becomes close to impossible to keep your sanity.
