I decided to quit playing poker when I got into med school and, being surrounded by private school kids, never really brought it up or talked about it to anyone.

Fast forward about 6 years and I'm sitting at junior doc having dinner with other juniors and a few senior EM consultants when one of them asks me what I did before med. For some reason (and a few drinks) I was honest and told them I spent 2 years making a (very sketchy) living off poker. Cue an hour of questions.

Since then I've been cornered by two senior consultants who've asked me about my days playing poker because apparently 'card players would make the best EM docs'. Yesterday I had an informal talk with the director who more or less confirmed if I was to apply for a full time job in the ED next year I'd be a shoe-in.

Fucking poker man, opening doors everywhere.

P.s. LP nostalgia is huge, games look tight now tho, not such easy money these days =(

Walk up to the nearest brick wall and smash your head into it a few times. It's pretty much the same thing >.<

Best case of the week
16 year old girl in high-speed MVA following police car chase in which her 43 year old partner was driving. We're doing morning handover.

"How does a 16 year old have a 43 year old partner anyway?"
"oh they met at home"
"???"
"Oh he's also sleeping with her mum"
"..."

rofl, sounds awesome, it seems like it would be interesting though because it's pretty much puzzle solving but in the health department, just really don't think I would want to do the kind of hours they do, seems so stressful in the end

The hours are okay it really depends where you live though. In Aus we only work 90-120 hours a fortnight generally, most shifts are roughly 10-13 hours. In places like Canada/USA you'll work ridiculous like 36 hour on-call shifts and generally make less money than we do until you're at the consultant level.

I like ED because of the case mix but it's 95% crap and 5% interesting stuff. Some days you'll just see one gastro after another or people coming in with minor stuff because they can't get into their family doctor. Other times it's like triage 1 respiratory failure intubate, get those lines in GO GO GO and that stuff is the stuff dreams are made of.

Just to paraphrase what a lot of people say; if you want to do medicine then don't do it, if you want to do medicine and you cannot be happy doing anything else then do medicine.

Sorry missed the question. Emergency department. Pay is hard to calculate because the base rate is low (around $40 an hour) but the penalties are stacked on top of each other. I'm guessing I will crack six figures this year but barely; medicine is a very hard way to make a good living. The money is awful for the amount of work until you're a senior consultant and even then time-investment wise it is a lot harder than your average career.

Now locums make bank, and ED locum would make $1500 per shift and could easily work every day if they wanted to.
