Not a fan of this individual, but he often speaks about why Japan sucks as a foreigner. He used to have this video about why teaching English in Japan sucks, but he's now put that video behind a paywall of $10 on his patreon (if it's the same vid, since I can't seem to find it in his channel). The video was not really his, but his friend's, who had a teaching job in Japan but eventually quit. And here were some of his complaints from memory:

- the people that connect you to teaching jobs are scumbags
- you are overworked;100hrs/week
- you cannot alter your workload, and when you talk to your agency, they act like they will help you but lie
- you are underpaid; they want you stupid and fantasizing about teaching in Japan
- you end up bleeding a lot of money
- you are sent to obscure locations, not a bustling metropolis

the guy now has a job in China teaching English, and he's much happier there.

I'm pretty sure starting anew in East Asia as a foreigner sucks. I think SEA is more accepting of other cultures, but then you are in SEA and that has its own baggages.

interesting. i'll have to check some of his videos out. maybe i have been stuck on one side of the spectrum in my japan youtube vids, where it seems to be glamorized heavily.

i have a very particular set of skills. skills i have acquired over a very long career.
as of right now, retire young or live off of some type of passive income. i realize something like teaching in japan is the exact opposite of that because the money sucks but like i said, i feel like i need to do something to shake things up
poker was a pipedream in my late teens for me. was never able to beat .25/.50. i live next to some casinos but i don't have the attention span anymore to sit and grind out long sessions. that, and black friday

I think the most important question to ask yourself is how easy would it be to get your job (or an equivalent job) back if you took a hiatus to do something else and returned. If the answer is very easy, then sure why not spend a year traveling doing whatever. If not, then I would be super hesitant to leave. This is coming from someone who spent a big chunk of his 20's traveling and loved it.

Is it possible to make decent money in your field as a remote independent contractor? I would look into that if you haven't already and see what rates people with X experience/qualifications are charging.

LOL come on at giving any credibility to what that dude says, he's like the epitome of trash American tourist. There is zero chance the average English teacher works anywhere near 100 hours/week in Japan or anywhere else on planet earth. I'm a teacher (not english) and I generally advise against going into teaching English abroad as a career choice, but if you want to fuck off for a year and have some fun while breaking even on bills/travel expenses and having low expectations for the actual quality of your teaching, it's fine.

There are sketchy recruiters and sketchier language schools, but anyone who ends up surprised by a school's remote location or low pay is incapable of doing the most rudimentary research (which probably describes most ESL teachers).

first question, i think it should be pretty easy as long as i maintain my competency. the program i mostly use are SQL, excel, and tableau, all of which aren't hard (imo).
second question, yes it is possible, but more on the consulting side i think.

my expectations would be making shit pay (reading the average is like $35k USD or something) living in some bumfuck country town. i don't have many obligations right now (only debt is a car payment), so flexibility in terms of career/future is something i can afford. i'd be using this more as an excuse to go do something else than as a long term career plan and then go from there.

yeah i just watched some of that guy's videos and he seems like a real fun guy to be around.
