Wait wat?
Why do I have this image on my phone? How did I come to acquire it? How did I find time to put in this many sessions while working full time and make more than double my income in less than a month?
Easy. Get lied and manipulated to by your own company to the point you have to let them call your bluff and just walk out the fucking door. Yeah thats right. Remember that offer of 52k I supposedly had? It was bullshit. It never materialized. Week after week I kept getting the run around on my actual start date with excuse after excuse about budgetary delays, finance department being slack, director of HR being on vacation, and on and on and on. I got sick of it, it was clear they were just trying to get a technician at a discount stringing me along for as long as I was willing to tolerate it, so I walked.
Yeah baby thats right, I told my boss I would be taking some time off and to get back to me when that offer is put in writing. I took my last 3k in my checking account and went to run it up, and run it up I did. Clearly my hourly is absurd, although funny thing is it didnt really feel like a heater. It wasnt like I was making boats and flushes nonstop. I just did what I always did, played a lot of TPTK type hands and iso'd with draws that hoped to build equity postflop. I mean when people are floating every cbet with ace high or bottom pair it's not like you have to do anything special to beat them, just hope your hands hold by the river.
So I ran up a 10k roll and then the inevitable happened. My company FINALLY fucking put an offer in writing. Thats right they let me go for 3 weeks without a peep before begging me to come back, but only because someone else quit. Is this really the kind of company I want to work for? The kind that would just ball faced lie to me to exploit me and only when they are pushed to the brink do they finally do the right thing?
To top it all off they REDUCED their initial offer! They said the best they could do was 50. I mean honestly how slimy do you have to be to offer someone 52 as a lie just to string them along for months and then when they tell you to fuck off you come back with an even lower offer bUt iT's Fo rEaLz tHiS TiMe Yo!
Siiiiiigggggghhhhhhh.... So I took it, because $130/hr is not sustainable at 2/5 and last time I tried to make a go at poker on a 10k roll I went busto. Or did I? I didnt lose my money, I just spent it. I upgraded every standard of my lifestyle so that I was living "paycheck to paycheck" as a poker player, only able to put in enough time to pay the bills. So I did the smart thing and took my 10k plus this job and moved back right? Well thats what I did. I write this from my own apartment that is embarrassingly devoid of any furnishings besides a King mattress I just bought, but I'm working on that. And now the grind is back on Monday-Friday.
I guess I'll just ignite the rest of my roll and get a couch and TV and stuff so I feel normal and can at least bring a girl home or something.
Feeling very conflicted.....I was back, back in the game. I was ready, and I just walked away.

I think you did the right thing. There is a bankroll chapter in "Mathematics of Poker" that talks about risk of ruin. I am pretty sure given your past shots at poker your risk of ruin was always 100% due to variance and expenses.
I am sure you know this now but you gotta get that offer letter ASAP. Really shitty for that company to string you along like that but that's what corporations do. The $52k to $50k is just sort of a tactless negotiation tactic. Again, many corporations are not above this. Something to look out for is now that you are on salary they or you will work you/yourself like a dog. I forget what Byung-Chul Han calls it but it is basically self-exploitation. It is even worse than the company exploiting you. I was in a really similar spot in 2013: company understaffed, sparse apartment, newly salaried. It was just an all hands on deck situation at work and I was just in it and self-exploited super hard. I didn't negotiate for help or more sane hours. I just did it and then my project is how do I fill up this empty apartment. It's how I ended up with the infamous $3k le corbusier lamp (among other STUFF). So, it's like a never ending project at work and a never ending project to perfect my apartment and I ended up burning out super hard. I can be an extreme person though who also has bipolar and alcoholism so you might be ok I am just lending some experience. Getting a nice couch and a nice tv I found to be +ev and there should be some plants (snake plants are great), good lighting, maybe a nice coffee table. Man, I spent a lot of time in Target, Ikea, Crate and Barrel, et al. just trying to find the right stuff and it was actually kind of fun and my apartment was pretty "authentic" and chic but all I ended up doing in there was drinking myself into a stupor. I always kept a bottle of Veuve Clicquot and Chardoney in the fridge in case I picked up but I never actually did and always ended up drinking the bottle of Veuve and driving drunk to a strip club or something. Anyways, $50k at a reasonable job is not a bad situation. Proceed wisely and a sane dating life shouldn't be too difficult. I mean the "book" says to expect to put in a 2 year tour of duty at this company and re-evaluate but if shit is sketchy I'd already be looking at good outs. It also gives you more leverage in negotiations with your current company. |

Dude, he doesn't even have a couch or a tv. How is he supposed to Netflix and chill?
You poker bros would have him buy some meditation cushions online and put in a 5pm-5am shift on Saturday nights...
A big, ass comfy couch from Crate and Barrel and a tv won't even be more than $3k anyways. I mean I am a big fan of going minimal but if I worked a 40+ hour week and came home at 5am Sunday morning a big loser to a barren apartment I would feel pretty miserable about myself. Spending Saturday afternoon reading on my big, comfy couch always made me feel pretty great. Watching cinema, taking naps, having a comfortable place for people to crash are all benefits. A tv I can take it or leave it really but I feel like it's a few hundred bucks in order to not be a tv-less maniac. I've been a Steve Jobsian tv-less maniac before and people kind of worried about me. It makes picking up or having people over kind of impossible if you only have a blowup mattress, one of those cheap plastic fold up tables, desk chair, and unpacked moving boxes as furniture. |

Can still play weekends. Probably more fish too. Keep poker roll separate. |

Good for you re: taking the job while on heater.
Also, if you don't want furniture, don't get furniture. Don't fall for that societal expectation trap/blowing 3k on some couch and tv noise.

Newb specifically said he was looking to bring some women home. Unless he can find minimalists or Steve Jobsian eccentrics no couch and no tv isn't really going to fly. I mean we can completely disregard societal expectations but there are consequences to that. I can stop showering and brushing my teeth but then I won't have any social connections. This is coming from someone that used to not have even a dinner table at one point. I ate all my meals on the ground. I've since come to be attached to a comfortable bed and couch. Going through a Buddhism phase I gave up my bed to sleep on the floor for a few months and it was cool but I feel like I get better sleep in my bed and it's a great place to read. I suppose some women aren't going to be opposed to fucking on the floor but then sleeping on the floor is probably a tougher sell. There is some fine line here in Western society of what is appropriate for household furnishings. Maybe we can figure this out. |

I'm not some sex obsessed womanizer. It would be nice to have a girlfriend again, but I definitely agree with RiKD here that having at least a few home accouterments can have a positive impact on your overall mental health. For instance I've been eating all of my meals in bed or standing over the kitchen sink because I literally have nowhere else to eat. It wears on you psychologically and broods depression. I get neck cramps trying to watch netflix on my laptop via hotspot. Im not gonna go all out and get wall art and other decorative accents, but a couch + TV I think would be a good start to hate life a little less. I think at that point, having something to look forward to and unwind when I get home rather than an overpriced sleeping den will give me some peace of mind. From there if I'm satisfied with my current arrangement I'll start planning my next poker foray. |
