Damn brother, I lost a cat not too long ago. Vets never could figure out what was wrong with him, he just kept losing weight, eating less and becoming lethargic. One day he started gasping for air, ER pulled out a coke can volume worth of fluid from his lungs. They said it's only downhill from there. I took him home anyway, 2 nights later he's drooling and gasping for air again. Rush him back to the ER, make sure that putting him down was the most humane thing to do given the circumstances and they said yes, held him while the needle went in until he went out. Just know that whatever your buddy was going through his suffering is over.

I always wanted pets growing up but family never liked animals. Now it's hard to empathize on the same level as some of the pet owners in the comments. Sometimes I wonder if I did have a pet growing up id be "less cold" as you say or if it would have made no difference at all.

I've been playing around with the idea of having a pet as an adult for close to 10 years now. Its turned into somewhat of a calculated mathematical problem rather than some search for companionship. Cat vs dog. -->dog. Adopt vs purebred? --> purebred-->which breed? Which coat? I've been playing around like that in my head for years now. I've settled on Shnauzer Regular sized with a black coat and I haven't budged from that for the longest time ever. Not sure if I actually want a pet or not though at this point.

Sebastian was a pretty cool name for a cat.

Thanks for the well wishes everyone. Strangely I feel like posting this on LP made it better.

He did have a great life and he was suffering near the end. In some ways I'm happy he had very severe suffering at the end for a short period and then died versus prolonged suffering. Trying to choose between putting him down versus him having some miraculous recovery would have been tough.

Witnessing the death is the worst. Take the time to grieve him man. RIP Sebastian.

Saw a goose suffer and die in front of me on my morning walk. Caught the last 5 mins of its life, alone in a field. She was wounded on her back and couldn't get her head off the ground in the last couple mins. It looked like she was fighting against something to get up in the last minute and I thought it was an injury that prevented her but she probably convulsed while her organs were failing. She immediately stopped breathing completely after.

I hate when that happens. Sorry about your cat. Losing a pet is really hard. I always had dogs and my hardest time is when one died.
