i recently ate at the american chain restaraunt "caracker barrel" for first time.
i was trying to get a to-go order because I did not want to pay the tip. to me, getting a to-go order is a way to avoid this...thats the whole point of a to-go order.
well the weird thing about this restaraunt is that when u say "I want a to-go order" they say OK the server will be right with you....then the server takes ur order and you pay at the cashier.
to me this is a bizarre thing. most other restaraunts u just take the order at the register and they bring u the food. with this particular system they kind of expect u to tip the server. to me this is kind of crazy. a did this a few times and one time the server did seem upset about no tip.
i looked it up on quora and there are actually ppl that say "oh well when I am at cracker barrel I do leave a small tip, (maybe like $1) because of the way they do it".
whatever the case I dont want to leave even $1. am I wrojng for thinkin this way?

I usually tip about 10% for takeout. Even with takeout there is a person that writes the ticket to the kitchen and bags up your items and makes sure everything is correct, etc. That person is probably making $2/hour. So they are working off tips. If you want to be a cheapskate that's up to you.
I really dislike tipping culture though. It's probably the biggest thing I hate about living in America. It's even more annoying that it's becoming more prevalent and now every single transaction at every single business (except fast food) asks for a tip. |

ill b perfectly honest sometimes i get this narrative in my head as an asian dude i feel like i would be less likely to be hired by these ppl as a server therefor i tell myself FUCK THESE PPL and somewhat have a LICENSE TO CHEAP lol...
honestly i know its a bit of an excuse but i do think its an actual thing.
would restaraunts be just as likely to hire the orthodox jew guy with the yamaka as a server? i personally dont think so. if we data mined millions of receipts would that guy's tip amounts be less than xyz other demographic? (hot girl, jock white dude). I personally would bet he would make less. thats why i personally feel those ppl should not be judged if they tip worse because its not like they r treated the best either.
this is a small portion of my tip strategy. i usually tip 15-20% for eat-in/food delivery. mostly i just never thought i should tip take out but this caracker barrel place does things different than any restaraunt.

also idgaf about "person makes xyz"
as poker players we should understand the law of large numbers. if u know population tips xyz amount nothing wrong with exploiting the pool if you know that other ppl tipping reasonably well if u have a good reason.
these ppl are likely not going to starve because of ur 1 tip, and honestly these jobs are supposed to be a stepping stone anyway as far as I am concerned. if you need more money get a better JoB |

I also hate the tipping culture. In a sit-down restaurant, sure, no problem. That being said, if I get shit service, that's definitely cutting into the tip (or eliminating it altogether).
But this whole tipping at Subway-esque restaurants, where you stand and look at the menu, order, pay and leave... wtf is that garbage. I tip this one schwarma place because I eat there all the time and love the food/the people working are always happy and appreciative, but other than that - usually a hard no when tipping at places where I'm looking at a menu on a wall and standing while ordering. |

the only rational reason to tip is that its expected because restaruaunt industry that is what the compensation is based off of.
i dont understand this "service" bs lol. its not even that hard of a job. alot of times "good service" is about factors u cant even control like how attractive u are and total bs like "being fake nice = good service".
why should anyone have to randomly smile at ppl like a dancing monkey for some tip its ridiculous!! |

just throw them a buck or two man, their lives suck and they're poor as shit and you probably have plenty of money. It's nothing to you and everything to them. |

I have to think about this.
Idk if I agree with this their lives suck sort of thing. I don't think necessarily these ppl r that poor. Alot of time they are pretty young girls. I don't consider a 20yo woman who has her full beauty and earning potential to be in a bad life situation and you are supposed to be poor when u are 20.
Btw do u tip at the cage when you r cashing out in live poker? I feel like this is a similar concept. |

"exploiting the pool" lmao. It's not some clever angle you're taking advantage of. You're just being a cheapskate that doesn't want to part ways with a couple bucks.
But yes it's always going to be +EV to not tip at all and keep your money for yourself, assuming you assign no value to your dignity and being seen as a leech

there's nothing at all +EV about this because you've overlooked the critical fact of he's wasted at least ten times the value of the tip in everyone's time including his own wasting time shitposting about this like it's 30 years ago and everyone is fucking mr. pink move on |

If your intention is to not tip because enough other people tip to make up for you that’s basically the definition of being a leech. You want to contribute 0 because everyone else is contributing some. It’s like going to a potluck dinner without bringing a dish because you know everyone else will bring enough food to feed everyone. Or it’s like sitting and enjoying a street performer and not putting a dollar in their guitar case because everyone else is putting in some money. It’s leeching off the generosity of others to get something for yourself. |
