When you play poker alot, and over a span of years, you spend alot of time reflecting on how you've grown.
I'm really proud in how far I've come along.
When people ask me what my best poker skill is, besides luck the answer is following my gut. 95% of the time I've second guessed my gut feeling and instincts, I've made the wrong decision.
Start respecting your instincts. You'll be surprised how smart you are.
That's all. Anyone out there know where I'm at?

yeah i demonstrated this a long time ago, and explained biologically why it is correct:

to elaborate on why "gut feelings" are a good tool in poker:
the left and right hemispheres of the brain store different kinds of information. the left hemisphere is highly verbal, understands time, and dominates most logical and sequential forms of thinking. the right hemisphere is highly visual, has no concept of time, and is dominant in reading facial expressions and body language. the two hemispheres communicate with one another through a bundle of fibers called the corpus callosum, which is right in the middle of the brain.
the communication between hemispheres is not always perfect, and they can, in fact, become somewhat disconnected during periods of lapsed concentration. in fact, sleep is just a disconnection of the hemispheres and a significant shutdown of the left hemisphere. (this explains why we do not sense a passage of time during sleep -- because the side of the brain that understands time is not active).
so, this brings me to the real meat of this post. information stored in the right brain cannot always be verbally translated by the left brain. if you have stored a picture of angelina jolie in your right brain, your left brain can translate that image into the name "Angelina Jolie". however, not everything is so straightforward, and often times what is really good, useful information in your right brain simply comes out of your mouth as "i just KNEW it." this is fine, and don't shy away from it. when your gut tells you something, DO NOT LET YOUR LEFT BRAIN TALK YOU OUT OF IT. the left brain is very fussy and demands that it be able to verbally translate and justify things before acting on them, but you can control it if you try. don't talk yourself out of acting on your instincts. just act on them, and if they are wrong, over time they will correct themselves as the right brain learns. |
