Quail Hunting in Nevada By: Luke Harris - [recreation] Posted 10/05/04 Quail Hunting in Nevada Most people see the Nevada desert as they're cruising along a major highway perhaps headed to California or Utah. From the car the landscape looks monotone and lifeless and this is what I hope they see. Less populated areas mean great hunting. I know the truth about the Nevada desert. It's bustling with life-lizards, snakes, sage, and most importantly to we hunters-quail, chucker and deer. Over 90% of the land is public property and this means lots of open space for hunters. The California Quail Nevada's quail inhabitant is the California quail (Oreortyx pictus) which has a lifespan of up to 4 years. The plums on their heads make them easily recognizable. During the warmer months they're known to migrate to elevations of 10,000 feet before they head for the lowlands during the fall and through the colder winter months. This means that during hunting season you'll often find them in the sage and especially near steep slopes which the California quail love. In the fall when these birds congregate in covey's it won't be uncommon to run across a group of 20 or more. This makes for some exciting action. The Right Hunting Dog The best hunting dog for the sage is one that is small, quick and light. Though I use both a Labrador and a spaniel, the spaniel's agility and ability to leap make this kind of hunting effortless for her. The Right Shotgun The size of the California quail means that you'll only need a 20 gauge shotgun at most. Don't forget good hiking boots as you'll run into all sorts of terrain in Nevada. You'll be hunting in sage, as well as wetlands and farm fields. Quail Hunting Season In Nevada Quail season starts in October and continues through January. A Great Experience Hunting in Nevada's sage is a unique experience. You'll find plenty of scenery, space and wild game.
