I got this new negreanu book that is billed as the "Super system of our age" and shit. I guess that's cause it's like Dan + a bunch of other "pro's" writing different chapters. They focused it all on NLHE though, so that's a plus. One chapter is called "Online short handed cash games" so since that's what I play I went straight to that. It was written by Paul Wasicka, which was kinda weird for me to see since we were in boyscouts together, went to the same highschool, and have lots of mutual friends. So I was hoping it would be good.
Either I'm a pro cash game player or Paul decided to hold back on the secrets, cause his chapter was short and full of general basic advice that I've heard a million times and given about half a million times. He also laid out some stuff that sounded pretty bad. Overall I finished the chapter really quickly and left it going "wtf is this BS?" cause the introduction to the book was hyping about how they were gonna blow my mind.... how this was gonna revolutionize poker... how the strategies were so profound I would need to re-read the book 3 times to understand. I can say without a doubt that Paul didn't deliver on that promise with his chapter. Serious disappointment.
I'm gonna read negreanu's chapter next since that's supposed to be the most mindblowing one, and if it's no good then I'm gonna shelve it.
Oh well, guess books just don't help at this point. Right now my coach is by far the best learning source and then DC videos come in 2nd place.

The books are written to make money... you do realize if they gave steady grinders serious good information other than basics it wouldn't be +EV right? It's for the newbs out there who watch it on TV and want to learn "secretz" from the pros... like every other book... lol |

i've read a lot of live pro's books and the only one that (in my opinion) is actually useful for online grinders is the poker mindset by tommy angelo |

There's surprisingly no real poker books on the market. I should write one. |

It is a real book, but its a real book written by mostly live players. If you want a mindblowing poker book, get Slowhabit/CTS' book. |

Hmm, I actually think ''The Mathematics of Poker'' was pretty solid because it shows deeper math that lies behind poker, not just standard pot odds and implied odds. They really got into the math behind frequencies (mostly through limit because it was easier to prove stuff) like a range that consists of 20% air, 10% nut hands that beat you etc. etc. I think it was really good. Basically solving the game and showing how bet-sizing should effect your range, frequencies and all that shitload and all kinds of stuff like that.
What also was quite nice was the mathematical explanation of bankroll management and risk of ruin and everything that had to do with it.
Wasn't really revolutionary but it definitly taught me some things I didn't know yet (ok, I was more of a noob back when I read it than now and I am still a noob now even). |

theres only a few live players that play to the calibur that i would consider "perfect poker" or as close to it as possible.
doyle on a consistent basis plays ultra solid on HSP, PA, DB as well, although I think he uses his FE a little too often (his FD vs Guy's two pair that they chopped comes to mind)
daniels great until he tilts, then GET OUT THE BOOK - he should write a chapter on being a POW when hes steaming, its like he never believes anyone
Phil Ivey, best player in the world to this day imho, when it gets to 500/1000 and higher and you make more than everyone else in way less hands, then you gotta be close to the best.
I think this year when durrs doin HSP and wsop and vegas etc, he will become known as one of the worlds best
my mind thinks he will either do really great this year or really bad, but my instincts say great |

Duh. Watching poker on tv is hilarious. But as a noob books were helpful and fun and I figured it would be fun to read some new ones and see what they're saying in the brand new shit. It's definitely more cutting edge than previous books, but compared to what I learn here on LP it's fucking light years behind. |
