My old comp broke, I shed an emo tear for it, and bought a new one a few hours ago.

Here are the specs:

Windows Vista Home Premium
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU
920 @ 2.67GHz (8 CPUs), ~2.7 GHz
Memory: 6632 MB RAM
Gfx: ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series
DAC Type: Internal DAC (400MHz)
Total Memory: 2293 MB

I got it for $999.99, and so far I've gotten the impression that I got a pretty good deal. One thing I'm concerned about is the Internal graphics card; does this mean it's difficult to upgrade it? Is it much worse than external graphics cards?

Also, I still have my old hard drive from my broken computer. I'd like to salvage some files from it if possible (assuming it's not corrupted). My roomie told me I need some sort of encasing mechanism to use it as an external hard drive. Since it has an operating system on it, I don't think I can exactly hook it up via a USB cable and acess it. If anyone has some idea of how to do this, please help.

integrated is built onto the mother board but u can still upgrade it if u buy an external one and sticking it in a sli slot. external is better yes.
If your old hard drive still works why not boot up your computer with that hard drive and back up all your files then put the new one back in?

Just do whats right

I was planning to do that but some computer nerds on some forum topic mentioned that you can't just boot a computer with a harddrive that may not be compatible with the settings on the computer. Apparently harddrives are extremely specific and if the settings aren't appropriate it could become corrupt or something. No clue if this is true.

it deff wont hurt anything on the hard drive if u try.. but depending if u had vista on ur old hard drive, u might have problems, alot of those high spec things need vista to fully operate.

what i would do is start with a clean install anyway, the comp specs u got do seem like a good deal for 1K.

just internally plug in your old hard drive and grab the files off it that u want. You can add it in internally without booting to it.

Its hard to make a easy buck legally, its impossible to make a easy buck morally.

What did you have before? These i7 CPU's are sexy

You don't have to boot from your old drive to get the files off.
Just put it in and it will probably appear as drive D: or something.
(Shut your computer off always before you open the casing or mess with it otherwise.)

Had some problems installing an external video card next to an integrated one about 10 years ago.
Maybe for you it will work better.
In general the onboard card are *really* sucky compared to the (high end) external cards.

set your old hdd as a slave by looking at the jumper pattern map on the top of it, plug it in and you'll have no issues with it whatsoever.

buy an external video card, internal will prob piss you off and you might have to disable the old one with some jumpers on the motherboard im not sure sure i havent messed with that stuff in a long time and the advice im giving you might be 6 years outdated cause that was about the last time i was up to date with all of it.

Don't have to do that if its a SATA drive, so keep that in mind Also if its a SATA drive, some comps have a plug for that on the back so you could in fact use the internal drive as an external without an enclosure. (Although enclosures are fairly cheap if you don't)

good move!

only thing that jumped out at me was the video card. I'd go to the store and find out what the best card is for gaming and buy that and put it in the slot.
