Teabag Parties

Another hilarious development of the right wing...

Don't know what I'm talking about? Not your fault, you're probably not a government-hating Fox-News watcher. Weeks back when CNBC's Rick Santelli went nuts on the floor of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, he called for a Chicago "Tea Party" to protest the government "rewarding bad behavior" with bank bailouts and mortgage relief.

People were psyched at the prospect of reenacting the centuries-old technique first used to protest unjust taxation, and have planned "Tea Party" or "Tea Bag" protests across the country for tax day, April 15.

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/F26vC_1_8xw&color1=0xb1b1b1&color2=0xcfcfcf&hl=en&feature=player_embedded&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/F26vC_1_8xw&color1=0xb1b1b1&color2=0xcfcfcf&hl=en&feature=player_embedded&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

If the news stories popping up every ten minutes from local outlets across the country are any indication -- stories about tea parties planned in places like Palm Beach and Allentown and Reno and Missoula -- there are going to be a hell of a lot of tea parties on tax day, with tens of thousands of people participating. But just as Rick Santelli seemed not to have thought out his impassioned rant against government bailouts -- the rant that got the whole movement started -- there seems to be a bit of a struggle within the tea party movement to control its message.

Anti-immigration activists have reportedly been rebuffed by one of the groups helping coordinate tea parties nationwide. The tea party in Burleson, Texas might wind up sodden with Texas secessionists. Newt Gingrich has thrown his support behind the tea party movement, saying in a press release that the "American people are fed up with Washington's irresponsible spending spree." Nevermind that Gingrich supported the financial industry bailout.

Of course Fox News has jumped on the bandwagon HARDCORE, with Hannity, Beck, Cavuto and Van Sustren signing up for live full day coverage of the events and encouraging everyone to take part...

Fox News is making a mockery of its famous slogan, Media Matters says:

Despite its repeated insistence that its coverage is "fair and balanced" and its invitation to viewers to "say 'no' to biased media," Fox News has frequently aired segments encouraging viewers to get involved with "tea party" protests across the country, which the channel has described as primarily a response to President Obama's fiscal policies.

The Media Matters item goes on to beat up Fox for dozens of recent on-air statements it views as too favorable of the tea party movement, such as Glenn Beck's exhortation to "celebrate with Fox News" on tax day.

Of course they've started some fear mongering claiming that the "liberals" are planning to "infiltrate" and "sabotage" their tea parties... all because huffpost has asked for citizen reporters to attend and cover local tea parties. That's right, they will be at the party and then writing down what they see and submitting that to a website - serious sabotage and infiltration!!!

Fox News' Neil Cavuto reported Tuesday that the tax day tea party movement is being "infiltrated" by well-organized liberals out to destroy it.

"Only eight days before a nationwide tea party, some over-caffeinated crashers aiming to lay waste to it," Cavuto said. "Reports of very well-organized infiltrators trying to mix in and rain on this parade. Talk about taxing."

...

"How seriously do you take these threats?" Cavuto asked one of the tea party organizers he had on his show.

"Honestly, Neil, we don't take them very seriously at all."

I feel like this all kinda ties back to a previous blog post of mine where John Stewart took on this right wing epidemic of "Baracknophobia"

No offense but I think you and anyone else have to very very naive to refer to the government as "us" and "we". Do you really think they give a damn? All they care about is your vote to put them in office. And to get vote from dumb people you need to get money from the rich and for that you have to give in favors. Find a better purpose in your life. At least follow the economy. That way you can make some money too. But its guaranteed you will become instantly a republican. The only problem is that half the republicans are nut-jobs, jesus freaks idiots who want to tell people what to do in their bedrooms.

there's truth in pretty much everything you said there but you have an extremely negative view of everything. I agree that the government is NOT perfect representation of "us" or "we" the people. But I think it's a lot better than you think it is. There definitely are plenty of sleazy scumbag politicians who only care about getting your vote and then once in office will fuck you over. But there's good ones too, who care about the people who elected them and do everything they can to keep their promises. And yes, to get votes you need to raise money, and that means you have to get in touch with rich people. But not all rich people are scumbags, and with the internet grassroots fundraising of $5 donations from millions of poor/middle class people make it so politicians can be more choosy about which rich person money they take. And yes, there are lots of crazy nutjob republicans who want to force you to live their religious beliefs and it sucks that the republican party was hijacked by these extremists, but there's also lots of level headed, kind, charitable and nice republicans.

You come off as a very "Glass half empty" type of person to me, hehe.

And honestly do you have any idea what santelli was talking about in a rant? What do you call the goverment action if it's not promoting bad behaviour? You small Dems voters are very stupid on economic issues and goverment intervention. Santeli and many of the people who say Obama is an idiot think and say that bush/paulson was worse than Obama. Have a little open mind and listen to what they are saying. Just because you happen to have a more rational stand on gay marriage doesn't mean you are thinking more clearly on every issue.

Actually I do agree that the govt is rewarding some bad behavior. But I disagree that EVERY PERSON who is being foreclosed on was on bad behavior. There's a lot of middle class hard working Americans who made their payments every month and still got kicked out. Again, it's not so black and white. I hate the idea of good people getting screwed over because other people were doing bad shit. There's been an effort to save those good people but sadly the idiots are getting the benefits too. But I think it's a situation where it's better to save the good people and the idiots along with them than it is to say fuck the idiots and let the good people get screwed with them. Ideally we'd be able to find the idiots and let them suffer the results of their actions and help the people who got screwed despite trying to be good citizens.

You are wrong. If you deposit all your money into a bank and the bank goes bankrupt its all your fault. Just because you worked hard for your money before you deposit it doesn't mean you are doing your homework. You had to research the bank and know what biz they are in and get familiar with the risks involved. If you play poker and "your mind isn't set on the game" you cant ask for the hand to be reset just because you are a good guy.

If the government removes FDIC then we see all the bad banks and bankers will die. But now people don't give a damn cause the government is going to pay them anyway.

Same idea is behind mortgage. If the government weren't backing up loans people who make bad loans will die out fast. But now no one really gives a damn cause tax payers will pick up the bill in the event of failure.

Capitalism will ONLY work when you let the bad ones die. And the most important rule for capitalism like Santelli puts it: "In America a card laid is the card played"

In short if you are "good citizen" and you make 1000 correct move and just made one mistake and for WHATEVER reason you cant pay. You have to get punished. Cause there are tons and tons of other citizens who didn't make that one mistake either.
