Advertising Fail

Several months back they started advertising for a new movie called "The Spirit" which was another graphic novel thing in the vein of Sin City and 300. The ads fucking blew. Just some guy running on super cartoony rooftops talking about his city bleeding or screaming or some shit. The movie looked stupid as hell and I had no desire to go see it. I don't know for sure, but I think it bombed at the theaters. I never heard a single person talk about seeing it and I don't remember it being in the theaters for very long.

But now they're doing new advertisements for the DVD release and they are pretty sweet. You've got some good catchylines, nice visuals, sexy shots of sexy girls like eva mendes, and cool music. It actually looks like it could be an entertaining movie. Probably won't be a sin city but overall it has potential to be a fun action flick. So I've put it on my netflix list.

I can't get over how big of a failure their original advertising campaign was. If they'd done the commercials they have now then I'm betting that movie would have done at least decently. I bet whoever advised that original advertising campaign got fired and shunned, and he deserves it. That decision basically set the movie up to fail.

This gets me thinking to how important advertising is. There are so many bad movies that do well cause they have the power of big money behind them pushing commercials and product tie ins all over the place, and there's good movies who either have stupid advertising like "The Spirit" or can't afford to advertise and then do mediocre or fail. Yeah, it's kind of a "duh" moment so everyone with a smartass reply can save it, but it's also a kind of "whoa" moment to realize that you are going to miss so many great things cause they weren't properly advertised. It's all about marketing.

Yeah I'm betting it wasn't amazing, but it looked HORRIBLE and I didn't even want to give it a chance based off the original advertising. Now I'm willing to add it to my netflix list.

costs money to put a movie in theaters and keep it there, if a movie is gonna get blown away, sometimes the studios pull it.. this movie was probably one of those cases where it would do better with dvd/rentals without losing money and reputation in the theaters.. were both prolly gonna rent it now cuz none of our friends saw it in the theater and can let us know it blows...

ill just dl it tho.

i couldn't wait to see the spirit and watched it when it came out jan 1st i think.

it's terrible

i'm really into film and so was gagging to see the latest Frank Miller masterpiece but it was easily the most disappointing film i'd seen in a long time

thats why I watch the previews online. The online previews for Spirit were almost the same as the ones for DVD.

The better example of missing great things would be the Butterfly Effect that entered the theaters as a mediocre at best movie with a cheesy ending. Its only when the directors cut came out that it really shone as a psychological masterpiece.

really?

I avoided it cause it looked mediocre at best and then had horrible reviews. It peaked my interest at first but then as I saw more previews I got more doubtful and those reviews kinda locked me in to not seeing it. But I'll add the directors cut to my netflix as well.

yeah I saw the ad at the gym the other day, was like whoa is this sin city 2? then it said the spirit and was like wtf it's that crappy movie again. It peaked my interested enough to at least think about maybe looking into it but not enough to even imdb it when I got home. Either way, might dl it anyways, let us know if you liked it. You are right in the thinking of just much shit have you missed out because of no advertising? Well I had that same moment a year ago and have since taken a lot of time to go through tons of movies that 'didn't make it' or have bad ratings. There is so much good shit out there, just sucks it takes so much time to find it since presently to find quality low budget movies it's very hard. Even on forums they aren't very well diversified or able to send in the right direction of movies that may peak your interests. Anyways, rant over, just go through lots of comment feed back on movies at imdb and you will find a lot of stuff.

Like a good example is I just last week found out about the movie Dark City which is the Father of the Matrix, never even heard of it but it's worth a look at. Marketing was shit for dark city, matrix copied a bunch of shit from it, advertised/media the shit out of it and it become a billion dollar series.

yeah I saw that movie when I was a little kid cause my brother randomly picked it out at the video store cause he thought it looked scary. I kind of remember it and it was matrix-esque.
