I just talked with a friend of mine from HS and he's got the info on a handful of underground poker games. I don't think any of them are literally underground... unless they're hosted in someones basement (har har... ok no more bad jokes). But I was just expecting some home games that were consistent but it sounds like a full out Boiler Room type of operation. They've got dealers, waiters, food, drink, rake, etc. I wonder if there will be a steel door like at Teddy KGB's place.

I definitely wanna play more live poker but I wonder if this is a good idea. Concerns:

1) I have no idea how illegal this is, but I assume it is illegal. I figure if it's just some random home game it's really unlikely that cops would come, and if they did it would be easy to get out of. But since this is a type of casino set up I have a feeling I might actually be taking a slight risk. Probably not a huge one, but hell what do I know.

2) Rake. I have no idea what is fair rake or how to follow that shit. In Vegas it was a total mystery to me. I don't want to be getting myself into a situation where I will get rake raped. What should I be looking for?

3) I don't think this is a huge concern, but I feel like my risk of being robbed will hit its peak if I go to one of these places. I've never really worried about it before cause I mostly play online and the live games have either been at real casino's or home games with friends. But this will basically be me by myself with a bunch of people I don't know at a location that is probably pretty poorly protected. Luckily it's in Boulder CO so that reduces the risk cause people around here just aren't criminals very often, but I think this is probably the type of crowd/situation that would attract the few that we do have. I am probably worrying too much about this though as it's really unlikely. I guess I will actually have to watch the dealer for once to make sure he's legit.

4) I wonder, will the quality of play actually be good here? Home games are always filled with donks, but this sounds a bit more serious. I dunno if it will still be full of fish. Probably, but I wonder.

Despite these worries I'm definitely gonna go. There's a smaller NL100 game that I will check out first. If that goes well I'll try the NL200 game. If that goes well I'll try the NL300 game. I don't know if there's anything higher than that around here right now.

Any advice is much appreciated!

You take MMA man, your not gonna get robbed. Plus, you can usually sense someone plotting to rob you before it happens.

For all the live NL200 games i've been too, most places are 10%rake capped at $5.00 anything higher then that is robbery imo

How you want it, bars or bullets?

i doubt anything will go down there. most of the ones i have been to most of them were all older guys with money to just give away and have something to talk about and the big pots they got unlucky in and lost

haha I don't take MMA =) I'm not worried about getting beat up or anything. I actually am pretty sure that any robbery attempt will end in a fail on their part, I just don't wanna have to deal with it. Life is less stressful when you aren't worrying bout being robbed.

Read super system and you'll realize what it used to really be like. Robbery shouldn't really be a concern.

Where are you playing? I used to play in one in Boston and it was definitely a tougher 1/2 nl game than games at foxwoods or AC. And they're not all like in boiler rooms and stuff.

It is entirely possible that your game could be raided by the police. Not too long ago a big police raid in south carolina made headlines. Everyone was arrested and just ticketed, the owner tried to fight the charges. Not sure what happened with that but the game just moved across town so I hear. His operation was the same deal, dealers, rake, drinks, food, topless waitresses (sic), the works. I imagine if you are playing at a big house with 20 vehicles parked out front and whiny neighbors who are tired of the appearance the chance of cops coming increases exponentially. I wouldnt be worried about anything less than this though.

bye now

I go to these things in pittsburgh sometimes and it always seems pretty safe and no one's ever given me a problem in the 2 different games i've been to. One of them was in the back of a bar and the other was at an italian rec center or something. Its usually 1 or 2 tables with rotating dealers and free food. Its unlikely you will be robbed since its mostly old regulars in these games just having fun in my experience. It probably wont be raided since most likely the games will be pretty small and not worth the trouble. The play is absolutely horrendous. Tons of preflop limping, and then people are either mega stations or they just fold to every double barrel if they dont have a set. The rake seems pretty huge + theres tipping too, but it doesnt really matter. Your winrate will be enormous if its anything like the ones i've been to. Definitely worth checking out.

i have played in a lot of fancy home games like ur describing (since its the only casino-like, legit live poker around here) and i have never had any problems. i play at two different houses regularly and never once have i heard of any player being robbed of his money at any time. normally, the house is extremely concerned with being caught by the police (because it is definitely illegal) so general manners and respect are enforced. 95% of the people i have met and all the house owners are all upstanding people imo. majority of the players i play against are students like me looking for games, or restaurant workers/owners who are looking to gamble.

i think the people at risk the most is the actual house owner. a couple months back i heard a local house was robbed at gunpoint (where a couple of my friends were playing at the time). however the robbers dealt only with the house owner and the players were just told to get down and were largely ignored. but then again that house had absolutely no security (which is why i never played there).

so my advise is to visit the house and make sure they have some form of security. other then that i dont think u should really find many problems. also just for my own sake i always bring a friend to play with me if i am not familiar with the place. but like i said, majority of the people i have met in house games like that have all been great people, majority of them being regulars and just love to play cards.

the games will b way more fishy then anything u have ever seen... i wouldnt worry about most of your concerns, main thing is just waiting to get in a game can b a pain, and it being ghetto. GL

Dear nerd,

Then get over the fear of being jacked til it happens.....Obviously use common sense, but until a good vibe goes south trust your judgement friend.

yeah youll be fine uber fishy and great success i would make sure that they arent raking absurd amounts like 10 a hand but id say 4 to 5 is pretty standard for a 1/2 game

if your worried just pursue your constitutional right to bear arms and get a nice $400 glock. it's a good investment.

getting a concealed carry permit is probably relatively easy in colorado i would guess.

Just check it out a few times.. these sorts of games are the best you can find so worth a try. If you ever see anyone leave without paying you should probably not go there again. There's definitely some games out there you don't want to play in.
