Did some work on my mix since last time. This is the intro to As I Lay Dying's "Losing Sight" by me.
Listen to this: http://www.newgrounds.com/audio/listen/280845
Does it sound like a professional mix? ie can you tell it's just a humble home recording done with about 1k worth of gear?

love that band. saw them live a couple years ago with atreyu. they blew me away.

Pretty good, but surprised at how short it was. You should work on putting together a mix of 5 of their songs or so of into 1 full track. I would explogasm to that.

haha well i wanted to gather opinions from everywhere / listen to this mix on various sources / various quality encodings to make sure it's good before i devote enough time and energy into making an entire song out of it. thanks for the comments though :D

I said it before and I will say it again. Get the vocals in there before you mix the whole tune. You are just wasting your time mixing without vocals, as you will have to adjust everything to make the vocals sit nice.

I am a degen. Do not believe in any of my advice.

this rings very true for music that focuses around the vocals, but for this kind of music the vocal will basically be a very compressed scream vocal through an sm58, and the music will sound virtually the same (maybe small adjustments to make room for the vocals, but mostly the vocals will be adjusted to fit in with an already finished mix).

also just because there's no vocals doesn't mean you can't make a comment on:

1. guitar tone (muddy? clear? loud? quiet? too distorted? not distorted enough? EQ'd wrong? EQ'd right? Compressed wrong? Compressed right? punchy? buried?)
2. bass presence (distinguishable? powerful? barely noticeable? compressed wrong? compressed right? interfering with the kick drum? does it sit well / compliment the guitar? does it clash?)
3. drums (kick good volume / eq / compression? snare good volume / eq / compression? any clashes with the guitars / bass? cymbals too loud / too quiet?)
4. overall mix (distorted? clipping? smooth?)

etc. etc.
