I am a huge car fish. In fact I only passed my driving test today, and I want to buy a Jaguar and nothing else. It'll probably be something like a 1993 XJ6. Does anybody have any advice on questions I should ask people when I phone them? And what I should look for when I see the car. Bear in mind I know NOTHING about cars, so it would also help if anyone knows somewhere where I can learn these basics for myself. If anyone gives me lots of help I'm happy to make a donation to their degen fund because I want to do this asap. Thanks...

Thru phone you ask where and when to see the car.
If you like it take it to mechanic, preferably someone you know or your father knows or sth.
Then you lower the car cost, then you buy it. |

I cant wait to take their money | |

Its funny to see this thread actually, Just yesterday me and my boss at work were talking about cars, he's got an engineering degree in auto mechanics or some shit, and he mentioned that jaguars were really bad cars. I guess the Drive shaft, and alot of the front end pieces are always going bad. And theyre really expensive to fix. You might wanna check into that. |

Buying jaguar as your first car is pretty risky. They are very expensive to repair/change parts, and since you got no experience in driving you will cause damage to the car in or another way. So if you don't hate money change your decision as soon as possible |

But Jaguars are the most beautiful thing I have ever seen - I have to buy one the most (except for an aston martin, but give it two years). I love them! Are there any specific things I should look out for that could fuck me up?? |

You're wasting time/money on a jag imho, but if you really want to get one there are a couple of things you can check yourself.
1. Try to get there before he/she has warmed the car up, look for black smoke coming out of the exhaust when it first starts up (it should be white), black means you're burning oil.
2. Mileage (ie how many miles do these cars typically go for?)
3. Maintenance records: has all the required maintenance been done and on time?
4. Does it run on a timing belt or a timing chain?
5. Does the owner's manual call for high octane gas (91+)? Have they been giving it that consistently?
6. Does the manual call for fully synthetic oil? Have they been giving it that?
7. Take it for a test drive, turn the radio off, and get on it. How does it shift? It's probably an automatic (this makes you a bit more of a vag imho, but you're forgiven). It should shift smooth and not clunk between gears, the engine should sound solid without any knocking.
8. If all of that looks good and you really like the car, arrange for it to be checked out by a mechanic (there are shops dedicated to this). They typically arrange to pick up the car, they then check it out and drop it back off. They show you (not the owner), their assessment of the vehicle; essentially a bill of health. Cost = +/- $100 US
9. Use that to decide to buy it/deduct repair costs off of the asking price. Also compare asking price with the fair market value given our currenty economy (edmunds.com/kbb don't account for this as far as I know, but are a good place to start)
10. Change your mind, buy a toyota. |
