So I'm thinking of getting this show and checking it out, but I'm confused. As a kid I remember seeing it on TV and thinking it was weird/stupid. This was like 15 years ago. Then it seems that a new version of the show came out which has had 4 seasons, and I've heard that this new version is good. But I really don't get what's going on and am too lazy to try and find the history.
Anyone who's seen the show and can explain if there were 2 different shows and so on, and whether seeing the older stuff is important or whether it's fine to just jump in on the new one that started in 2003, please let me know =)

You do not need to know what is going on. Watch it from the start and all is explained. The new series is a complete remake of the old series. It does not follow on from it or anything. So there is no need to watch the old 70s show (which, wasn't amazing or anything). I have seen the first 3 seasons and it is really good. Make sure you watch the epic Pilot episode which basically explains everything. Its like a 3 hour episode.

It's a remake and it's very good, worth a try. Don't need to see the old one at all whatsoever. Doesn't help in the slightest.
edit: yea watch that pilot I forgot the structure of the seasons but there's something before season 1 that is basically like a miniseries |

Yeah it came out first as a mini series, and is like 3 hours long. So make sure you see that first before watching season 1. |

well, just 3 words about the "new" BSG: best series ever
And you dont need to watch the first miniseries (the 3 hour long) to understand the story, but i recommend it:
Miniseries -> Season 1 -> Season 2 -> Webisodes: The Resistance -> Season 3 -> Season 4 -> all the other BSG films-miniseries (Webisodes: Razor Flashbacks, Razor (TV Movie), Webisodes: The Face of the Enemy, The Plan(TV Movie))
oh btw, a new show called Caprica will start in 2010 weeeeeee

oh duh, now I remember why I'm confused, I used to see babylon 5 or something like that when I was a kid and mixed it up with battlestar galactica |

I'm up there with all of the shows you mentioned, so I'll just throw in one you didnt, The Office. Obviously a comedy and nothing dramatic, but it's a cute fun show nontheless. |
