Got choked by two different black belts today. First my roomie tried to do what I think was supposed to be a Cross Choke on me. Since we're both fairly new and I'm fairly good at pressing my head against my chest he didn't really get much done, in fact I was kind comfortable down on the floor chillin' while he was trying different things that didn't work much. The main instructor then decided to show how it was done, but since the main thing about this coke is that you'll have to apply a fair bit of pressure to make it work and he's a nice guy while I obviously fought like crazy not to give him any room it took him a good 20 secounds or so to apply it in such a way that I couldn't get air and had to tap. He'd probably do it in 5 or so if he just put some weight behind it, but whatever.
Then a guest coach came over, apparently decided that he couldn't have a white belt surviving that long against a black belt and choked me 3 times. My best time from him gripping my gi to me not getting any air was probably about 3 sec. He's apperently a BB under Murilo Bustamante since like 13 years and he was a really cool dude so it was a lot of fun. He kept repeating that "Some guys never taps to this choke. Jacare never taps to this choke. But that's a bad example, Jacare never taps to anything".
cliff notes: Got choked by two different black belts in one day. I thought it was really cool and really fun.

these black belts arnt " trying " to choke you out. they're trying to show others in slow motion how to do the technique. you kinda sound stubborn and a bad partner if you are fighting to not give someone a choke on a technique show. the other black belt came and choked you out a bunch to teach you a lesson. when your instructor is using you as a dummy to show others how to do a technique then basically be a dummy. you can give a little resistance but dont fight it. |

im sorry i dont wanna come off like a dick. im just trying to inform you of the unwritten etiquette of the bjj room. unless your trainer specifically says to try and avoid the submission which is usually only when hes showing how to prevent a counter or how to transition. but if he doesnt say that then give a tiny amount of resistance but dont fight it. hes trying to show his class how to pull off a technique, not submit a white belt.
this goes for all technique drills. give light resistance so that your partner isnt armbarring a dummy but do not fight it. you are just learning the technique. do the fighting it during rolling. |

Hey np, I'm happy when you teach me stuff. Obviously didn't try to push him away or anything just tried to keep my head tight to my stomach so that I wouldn't be exposed. What you say makes sense though so I'm fairly sure you're right and that I did a closer to slightish then biggish (?) error.
Also when I'm practising with my roomie we're basically going at it a bit too much (first 2-3 tries we're nice, then we're probably upping the resistance far to fast) but vs other people I'm really nice. |

theres a reason almost every guy who wins the no-gi tournaments trains in a gi for a lot of the time. best advice is to train both. but the gi benefits you from being able to not just power out of a lot of things. it makes you focus on technique more. lots of guys can get by low to mid level ranks with just decent technique and great athleticism. once you start climbing the ladder though you start getting crushed by guys with both. training both will benefit your game the most. |
