Hey,
So i ll be most likely going to Cologne to study since October++.However i know a lot of people there that tell me i wont be able to find a flat to rent with my 2 other friends without using some sort of company to find one for us and take like 2k euro just for that. They told me no one would give an apartament to 3 18 year olds foreigners.I just want to double check it with someone that actually lives there their whole life ( or most of it ? :D ) Is there really no way to get a decent flat without spending 10k eu just for companies, rents and kaution( well dunno english word )? Damn i dont want to be forced to live in some shitty place given to me by studentenwerk. All info is welcome !

from my experience (not in Germany but still image it would be similar):
yes, nobody wants to rent a flat to 3 young foreigners
if they do they require you to deposit a big amont of money (like 3 times the monthly rate)
studying abroad is expensive, if you want to cut expenses, you'll have to cut on quality too

Yeah it definitly will be quite hard to find a flat there without some proof of a steady income(dont mention poker!). So yeah some of these companys is probably the only way to go. |

yeah it is pretty common that there is no other renting a flat over those scamming companies...
but it is not because you are 3 young guys it is just that they know they will find someone who wants that flat...
there are just too many people for too less appartments...
just my 2 cents
and i live in dusseldorf so it should be the same in cologne |

yeah the situation in dusseldorf bonn & cologne should be quite the same
well thought so just wanted to double check
@ n1ck kaution = unpredicted expenses which costs the same as one 1 rent so u basically have to pay 2 rents for 1 month @ 1st month u get your house |

i know what you mean by "kaution"
its basically a deposit which you get back after your departure
i had to pay 3 months worth of rent for this in italy |
