This is one reason I have no desire to ever own a gun (unless it's the apocalypse or zombies have taken over, then load me up plz). I feel the chances of me or someone I love dying skyrocket the second a I have a gun in the house to "protect myself" with.
| NDIANAPOLIS — A 4-year-old Indianapolis boy picked up a gun left lying on a kitchen table and fired a shot that killed the 3-year-old daughter of his father's girlfriend, police said Friday.
After finding the gun, the boy pointed the loaded .45-caliber handgun at Aunesti Lee Allen's head before firing, Lt. Jeff Duhamell of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said.
Police said the girl's mother, Fiona C. Lee, 26, was home at the time of the shooting Thursday. She was arrested on charges of child neglect and drug charges after officers found cocaine and marijuana in the home. She was being held Friday at the Marion County Jail. |

You do realize that there's a safe way to own a gun and it's not leaving it loaded with the safety off on the kitchen table, right? |

I really hate any kind of weapon around the home for "protection"
doesnt sound like these kids had much of a chance anyway with or without a home arsenal, its just a shame they never got help before an inevitable tragedy. |

because the issue is perfectly reasonable adults owning guns and not completely fucking retarded parents leaving lethal weapons within the reach of little children? |

this fucked up situation is why gun control people have a legit reason. Sure, a lot of people are responsible and would keep ammo/guns in separate places and keep them locked with kids in the house. but there's also way too many idiots who shouldn't ever be allowed to touch something as lethal as a gun. |

The reason why everyone is so horrified when something like this happens is because it gets a lot more news coverage than other accidents that result in death. In addition, the coverage is usually spun to be a lot more dramatic than it actually is. About 70 children under five are killed each year in the U.S. in firearms related accidents but 250 drowning accidents occur in swimming pools (even more if you include beaches and boating accidents). Yet we would much rather have our kids play in our neighbors house if we knew they owned a pool instead of a gun. Not to mention, there are a lot more parents who own guns than pools, so the percentage of pool related deaths to pool owners is much higher than gun related deaths to gun owners.
I'm not trying to say what happened isn't tragic, but it's not a good idea to jump on the bandwagon and start blaming guns for the deaths. If the little boy stabbed the little girl to death, you wouldn't hear anyone blaming the knife. But because a gun is involved, and because we have been so conditioned by horrific news stories to think that guns = bad, we instinctively think it's not a good idea to own a gun. When was the last time the media blamed a pool for a drowning? I personally am neutral in the whole political debate over firearms and would probably never own a gun myself (just airsoft guns =D), I'm just saying it's probably not a good idea to eat up whatever the media portrays as good and bad.

Stabbing is lot more personal and also it takes intention while shooting with a gun almost feels like playing with a toy gun. Of course it's the fault of parents to be this negligent but if every negligent parents out there started owning gun, we are going to end up with lot of dead kids or the parents themselves.
And if "we instinctively think it's not a good idea to own a gun", maybe it is a smart idea to listen to your instinct and not own one. Maybe you will end up dead with the gun you owned. When you own firearms, you just raise your chance of being harmed by it too.
