Hi all,
Just had a 4 hour session tonight. Made around $50 playing 4 tables, 6 max, 0.05/0.10 NL. Didn't do to well the first 2 hours, but made a lot in hour 3. 4th hour I didn't do to much. My bank roll is now at $190~ so I have almost doubled it since Saturday. :D
So some questions for the more experienced players. What would be a good bank roll for playing the 0.05/0.10 NL games? And what are your opinions on the software I should be using? Poker Edge 5 is really helping me out, and PokerTracker 3 is helping with looking at my overall play. They both seem expensive though. What other good alternatives are out there?
Cheers

theres a lot of personal preference to bankroll management. just try to have enough buyins to where a few bad sessions wont destroy your roll. also have a certain point where youll drop down a limit. |

Hold'em Manager comes highly reccomended, but I think the colors are depressing. Tried it for a few sessions and all I wanted to do was slit my wrists. |

If the money you put into poker doesn't represent a significant amount of your IRL financial situation, then you should probably invest in Holdem Manager as soon as possible. You could just look at it as just spending the profit you've made since Saturday. |

If you subscribe to DC you get HEM for $50. You get a similar deal for PT3 through LP. I used PT3 all the way through the trial period and i'm liking HEM much better though.
Beware of hot runs btw, they can get really expensive when they end and you're unprepared |

Hey, my starting roll for 10NL was about $250 dollars. On the other hand I had previous experience of poker when I started (from other sites and limits) so I felt comfortable with "just" 25 buy-ins. I think there are different things to take in to consideration when making your bankroll. For example, do you play a high variance game, are you comfortable in your game or do you have a lot of basics to improve, are you comfortable at the limit, how much do you play and how many tables do you play? etc etc...
I used the 15 day trial from Holdem Manager when I played 10NL, I bought it later on feeling it really helped out my game. |

Wiltontilt one of the most regarded coaches on Deucescracked put up a vod a few days ago on bankroll management, and he basicly goes through everything. If you can refill, if you are planning on going pro, blabla so forth.
In general, we want a higher than we think to beat today's game seem to be the theme.

Another thing is do you move up when you have acceptable risk of ruin for the current limit, or do you move up when you have acceptable risk of ruin for the next limit?
If I think 20 buyins is acceptable risk of ruin for $0.02/$0.05, and I have 30 buyins for $0.02/$0.05, it may make sense for me to play at $0.05/$0.10 even though I only have 15 buyins for it, because I can lose 5 buyins and then drop down a limit. I'd still be squarely in my comfort zone. |
