I woke up this morning to discover that I can no longer play real money games on Pokerstars, due to a recent decision by the State Supreme Court to uphold the state's ban on online gambling.
State democrats in the legislature and the Governor passed a law effectively making online poker a class c felony, same as child rape, while taking money from the tribes who run lucrative casino operations in the state. At the same time as she is taking contributions from the tribes, the governor has given them a sweetheart deal where the state gets very little in proceeds from their operations.
All challenges to the law have failed and now Pokerstars has blocked users from the state from playing real money games.
30 September 2010 - PokerStars today announced that it would cease providing real-money poker to residents of Washington State. To date, PokerStars has operated in Washington on the basis of legal opinions where the central advice was that the state could not constitutionally regulate Internet poker, or at least could not discriminate in favor of local cardrooms and against online sites. Last week, however, the Washington Supreme Court for the first time rejected that position and upheld the state's Internet gaming prohibition.
In light of this decision, following extensive consultation with our legal advisors, we believe that the right course of action is to now block real money play by Washington residents on the PokerStars.com site. This policy will remain in effect until the law changes or subsequent legal challenges succeed. Our decision to block real money play in Washington does not affect the balance of funds in customer accounts, which remain completely safe. Our payment services team continues to be available to Washington State residents to assist with cashout requests.
We regret this decision, which will no doubt disappoint our customers in Washington State. However, in all of the jurisdictions where we operate, we are committed to making responsible decisions that are based on a full and considered understanding of the most up-to-date legal advice.
PokerStars remains supportive of passing sensible Internet poker regulation in the United States that will provide much-needed tax revenues and formalize consumer protections. PokerStars operates under those conditions, complying with rigorous licensing regimes, for its worldwide operations in the Isle of Man (UK), and for local operations in Italy, France and Estonia.

bingo
even tho this squeeze BS sucks hardcore from the government in the state of Washington. . . let me ask this;
which would be easier for PEOPLE in this particular state to have changed? this ruling or a federal one? neither is easy but one is vastly easier than the other
it is really sad tho that this shallow/hateful tantrum like move that ya was probably 'upheld' because of lack of revenue is something that I'm sure the federal government is very glad to see. In my speculation, this event will likely benefit the feds position to handle the issue as I'm sure that's how many people will unfortunately look towards in how to trump this
not a good day at all imo as the communistic outlook again wins vs the freedom works outlook
personally this is one issue I'd have to vote on by my feet which luckily at least is still an option

question curtinsea... is this the same policy they have for gambling as a whole outside of indian reservations?
if this is the state's view on gambling period then I gotta say that's a choice individual states should be able to make and I'd respect that.... backing them up only as far as letting it be and saying I see your point as I moved elsewhere in the hope that maybe in time they would see the error of their ways -- kinda like Texas is starting to
if not I wouldn't be surprised if that is a positional block put in place from the current casino's industry or maybe even the fed and would look to counter it by other current gambling regulations
and again, if the state was smart, they would follow the lines of allowing freedom to work to which they could and would get steady revenue from |

There are brick and mortar casinos outside of the reservations, in the state that allow poker and other card games. The state also operates a lottery, with online sales specifically exempted in the law. So I would say no, it doesn't represent the State's overall view on gambling.
It is worth noting that the state rep. who put the bill forward represents a district with several of these non-indian casinos. I guess I could go play there lol
