So, I'm renting a car with a friend. It's, say, $500 each for insurance. He doesn't wanna spend that much on it, but I don't wanna go around without insurance. But if we crash or something, we're obviosuly gonna split the cost. So I came up with this: I pay him the $500 that would be my half of the insurance to HIM, and we get no insurance, and if something happens, it's all on him.
Am I out of line, am I an asshole, is this fair enough, what do you think?
EDIT: so he doesn't want to get the insurance because he can't really afford it (tho he will get the money somehow if some crash happens), it's not like he simply doesn't want to pay it. Does it change your opinion?

100% fair, brillaint idea imo.
YOU MUST WRITE IT ON PAPER AND MAKE HIM SIGN IT.
you should both sign and date it, with the exact terms laid out. |

Exactly what uptown said. It's fair, but I think since he's paying the full amount should you be in an accident, you have to give something more than 250... I think something like 300? Maybe I'm wrong... Tell him to not be a nit and just get insurance though, jesus! |

go rent a car from the car rental than get insurance from an insurance company.
dont get car insurance from the car rental place cuz they charge alot higher than a company that just does insurance.
but i think what you are offering is fair. |

If you rent a car from a car rental company, and you use any of the major credit cards, you get free car insurance as a credit card benefit. I assume you have a credit card or two so call the companies you have them from and double check. Free car insurance yay! |

If you are going your route you have to get this in writing.
However, what the fuck kind of insurance costs $1,000 from a rental place?

Seems like a fair deal, however, I have to warn you to make it VERY clear what the insurance cover. It's not just "hey I pay you 500 and you take care of the cost if something happens".
You might as well disagree later if something happens, if the insurance cover it and not. And yeah trust me, it feels better to fight the company than your friend. |

I think its a decent offer but isn't feasible. He already doesn't have the money to pay for insurance, if something actually does happen I think you are fucking him way too hard. Not sure of an elegant solution though, pretty interesting ethical question.. |

It's fair but I also have my concerns about it. If you do crash, it seems like he won't be able to hold up his end of the deal. Which in turn is very fucked up cause you paid him $500 for it, which in turn may fuck up your friendship even though you guys had a fair deal. |

This is hugely +EV for you. You're essentially transferring 100% risk to him for only $500 or $600. While the chance of you getting in an accident is fairly low, you have infinite liability if you do. No insurance company would ever take on that risk. |
