I'm going to write up something a little longer and more in-depth about this at a later time, but for now I just want to quote something from a book that has helped me a lot over the past year.
The Poker Mindset by Ian Taylor and Matthew Hilger
Seven attitudes that every poker player should try to master regardless of their game, limits, or technical skills. They are realities you need to be aware of and attitudes you need to adopt in order to succeed in poker over the long run:
1. Understand and Accept the Realities of Poker
2. Play for the Long Term
3. Emphasize Correct Decisions over Making Money
4. Desensitize Yourself to Money (although I personally think a lot of people do this all too well) 5. Leave Your Ego at the Door
6. Remove All Emotion from Decisions
7. Dedicate Yourself to a Continuous Cycle of Analysis and Improvement
With that said, I would like to link you all to NoahSD's blog so you can become familiar with poker by the numbers: http://www.nsdpoker.com/
Now let your head assplode

Concerning NSD's blog:
I tend to disagree with the usefulness of this type of statistical analysis of (ESPECIALLY) deepstack poker. Forgive my lay terminology but here is my argument: In poker you aren't working in a closed system, by this I mean there are variables which are always changing. You aren't fighting against opponents who don't adjust. You aren't fighting against the same villains constantly. Each hand is played with different stack depths and just because you haven't played a 1000bb pot before doesn't mean anything as you whether you will in the future or not. Same as if a crazy fish sits at your table and rapes you or donates a ton of money. There's no way to tell who your future opponents will be; how often that crazy fish will sit with you or not. There is no way to take previous results and make strong predictions of future performance.
These are some ideas I've really only recently begun to think about though so I'd be interested in some discussion on this topic.

hmm really I will take another look. I thought he was saying that poker follows a normal distribution
oh I see, I skipped the last 2 paragraphs lol. I'm sort of talking about something else though. He sort of talks about how useless it is to try to predict your winrate but then continues on into a long exposee on how different winrates have different chances of losing over various sample sizes and stuff. That is all completely useless.
