Just picked it up at the store! Since I can't play poker anymore I need something to fill in my available free time. I've been playing Call of Duty and Halo Reach a lot but Call of Duty is just way too easy and has a terrible matchmaking system, while Halo pretty much requires an arranged team of 4 to play at higher levels and I don't have 3 friends to consistently play with. I'm a big Warcraft III player and have never touched Starcraft but after hearing about it for awhile and seeing some friends play it I decided I would give it a shot.

Since I have never played Starcraft in my life I will probably be a complete and utter noob at this game for awhile. I got better at WC3 watching some replays to learn builds and strats and stuff. Anyone got some good links to SC2 replay sites that might help me get a good starting idea? Obviously can't learn without practicing either, I'm just looking for some additional resources.

i'm curious about sc in general. i've never played sc in my life, but i've spent a fair amount of time playing custom maps in wc3.

i'm wondering if it's the sort of game where you need to spend 234908 hours on, in order to be decent at online games (aka, not get completely destroyed)?

i understand theres tiers and stuff, but would i be even a little bit competitive at the lowest tiers without spending bundles of hours practicing/microing?

last question - is skill mostly based on micro skills (apm i think it's called)? please say no

ull need to put 23424234234234 hrs if u want to become the best

but the people at the lowest leagues they play with 1 hand, and the matchmaking system its pretty good, ur never gonna play guys that are light years ahead of you, or light years behind.

If you played WC3 you will probably be able to pick up sc really quickly. SC has a balance between micro and macro. I've never played wc3 but from what I understand sc has a lot more macro involved than wc3 but that's only because wc focuses a lot more on micro than macro.

if you played war3 at any competitive level at all you are going to be like a pro in this game. Not only is the game itself pretty soft and forgiving, but the rankings/leagues/etc. are set up in a way to protect you from being overshadowed by better players. For example, during the beta I got rank 1 in my diamond league division (highest possible achievement) and had advanced as far a possible, so for all I knew I was the best player on the face of the earth. However this is obviously absolutely ridiculous seeing that not only were there literally hundreds of other "rank 1 diamonds" in their respective divisions, but the system by which they rank you is a fucking joke with all kinds of hidden, indiscoverable variables that inflate/deflate your real position by unknown amounts, effectively cushioning you from knowing your true level of relative skill.

So basically have fun "getting good" at this game and never being able to really tell how good you are through any kind of objective measurement.
