Well, my last great attempt at poker was when I got picked up on a stake in March. I put everything I could muster into it and it.. didn't work out at all. I had taken the week before black friday to clear my mind and was actually going to resume playing on that day. But it wasn't to be.

My personal strengths and skillset don't lend well to being a high-level poker player. There are much better opportunities for me in this world.
Poker is behind me as something I will seriously pursue, but I will still play when the opportunity arises and try to maintain a bankroll.

Anyways,
Even though poker hadn't been going well, black friday along with the events with my schizophrenic uncle, repeatedly injuring myself in the gym and all around life pressure, I've been really depressed and all of my personal habits went to shit. I started smoking like 5x more than I did for the past year and a half and that hasn't helped either. So I'm making some changes and am going to get back into that productive groove. I really hope the changes I make in my workout stop me from hurting (my right shoulderblade area was getting injured after my back day, I think it was the French Press so its gone from the workout now.)

As part of these changes I've picked up a new hobby: Dance. Moving to music has always been a love of mine, there's nothing like feeling that beat and returning some art from the soul. I've pretty much never practiced but whenever I'm out on the town I just lose my shit and go crazy on the dancefloor. Surprisingly, people compliment me. I always receive them bashfully because the praise feels unearned. It will feel good to earn it with a bit of practice and improvement. Maybe I'll post some videos of myself down the line if some.. entertainment value comes up.

Weed does not have a positive impact if you have an addictive personality like myself. If you can manage to smoke something like once a week or late at night, however I smoke until I have nothing left and then I want some more, when I'm smoking I'm very unproductive and only do self gratifying relaxing stuff.
Poker is fun stoned but I am unable to pick up on everything going on at my tables.
It makes me anxious in social situations where I don't know everyone but maybe that is different for others. It is also very expensive unless you grow it (if you grow it good luck not smoking 24/7)
I'm not saying it can't be positive in some areas but only in moderation. As well as possibly making you content with mediocrity which can be a good thing sometimes I guess.

Only way to quit poker really is to quit LP - impossible imo lol

Yeah I am not "quitting poker" at all, it has just been bumped down the priority list. Plus I consider playing online from the US not to be worth the time right now.

I'll write more about weed soon. One of the biggest reasons not to become a smoker is simply that it is illegal right now. It isn't something essential, and probably isn't worth the hassle if you get arrested for it. Aside from that factor it is still an interesting question though.

Overall though, my response regarding if you should try alcohol or weed for the first time is, "Its aight, you should look at the facts and determine if you want to give it a shot."

Sorry to hear about poker, but honestly imo the sooner you leave it behind and focus on something else, the sooner you'll be happy again. That's what happened for me =) You can always play for fun and have some money to grind now and then, but pursuing it as a life goal isn't worth it if it isn't the right fit. You've got all sorts of skills, go apply them somewhere that you can excel even more than you are now. Take what you learned in poker and apply it outside. Use that discipline, that ability to stare down a bad beat, the quick calculation and skill of building an image, and go kick ass at something else.

Definitely not good to smoke too much weed - you gotta be sober enough time to get shit done. I find I'm happiest when I spend the majority of my time sober and getting shit done, and then get high later when I want to chill out. On weekends I usually blaze during the day and enjoy it, but I make sure to keep the days as sober time during the week. Managed to get a 4.0 and onto the deans list last semester, as well as a scholarship from the psychology department while running that schedule and smoking weed everyday. I'm on track to have another 4.0 this semester. So if you balance it out you can enjoy the weed and still kick ass at life. It's about how you use it.

That's exciting about the new hobby. Dancing is awesome, such a great way to stay in shape and just make life more fun. I'd also suggest finding a good yoga studio - one that really focuses on teaching about the breathe and meditation as well as the postures. The good teachers are the ones which will tell you lots of details of where each body part should be, where you should feel the stretch, where your gaze should be, etc. There's also lots of different types of classes, some are very aerobic with lots of flows, others are relaxing with lots of static postures and deep stretching. We do a mix of both and god it's been awesome. We finally lost weight we'd been fighting with at the gym for ages. My body barely hurts these days and it used to be in constant pain. Also, at the gym I was unevenly building my muscles and ignoring the vast majority of them. In yoga I'm building all of them and strengthening muscles I never knew I had. It's amazing how much better I feel than I ever did while going to the gym. I feel healthier now than I did when I was 16 years old, playing football, starting lineup for offense and defense. That required being in good shape but I didn't feel as good as I do now as an old dude. Plus, it will definitely help you out with dancing as you will gain lots of flexibility and balance.

Good luck with the new hobby pal

no shitstorm, you were honest and it sounded legit. I agree that if you have an addictive personality you should avoid things which can be abused easily. If you don't have the discipline or are easily tempted, then weed can have a negative effect on your life. Also remember that the type of weed is important - strong indica's tend to make you lazier as they couch lock you, strong sativa's are less likely to make you lazy and some can even pump you up like an energy drink. I personally know that if I've only got strong indica in the house, I have to be careful not to smoke too early cause it's really hard to be productive after smoking it. But I can smoke a strong sativa and study like crazy and then go ace a test.

There isnt gonna be any harm in trying weed.

Getting stoned is a fun experience the first couple of times. Ive been stoned maybe a dozen times lifetime and only have the desire to smoke every now and then - which i almost never act upon because of lack of easilly available weed.

Get together with some friends, smoke some weed, play some video games, go to the store and buy loads of food/soda and just enjoy your heightened senses.

p.s. I can confirm Night2o1 is a first class dance-floor diva.
