Hey folks. A little while ago I had a sort of, what was to me at least, a penetrating thought.

High vs Sober thinking

In my experience, thought is controlled differently when high. Through years of practice the unconscious mind has become very effective at cutting running, tangent, or otherwise ancillary thoughts out before they ever surface to the conscious. I believe this is a very useful attribute during day-to-day living. However it doesn't serve as well when we try to bend our mind to abstract, more complex thoughts (philosophy, the inner-workings of finance, etc), or when we are simply trying to be creative.

When high and set to the task of considering a topic I've previously laid ground on, I find myself asking many more questions. Several of which, in hindsight, I realize I had taken for granite (u c wat i did thar?) as being "the way it is". Basically unconsciously ignoring certain aspects of a topic that I may of been unfamiliar with. But as a wise man once said, "Knowledge is in the nuances."

Creative thinking is a highly value attribute of humanity. We are unique in our ability to think abstractly, deeply. But many of us feel uncreative day in and day out, like being creative is for other people. I can personally attest to having had such feelings. Since then, however, I've come to suspect that many people aren't simply "more creative". But the way that a creative, effective thinker approaches a topic is the difference. Effective techniques for thinking are what set intelligent people apart. As an example of a technique that I've heard of successful people using is to write down any tangent or wild thought that could be developed further. It is important to welcome foreign concepts and ideas so that if we are to discard them, at least we have a more thorough knowledge of what doesn't work and why. It is therefore my contention that for many people it isn't that they are stupid or uncreative but that they don't have the proper knowledge of technique needed to think effectively.

At any rate I think I got part of my idea across.. there are many tangents from here, you see.

Do you consider yourself creative or a deep thinker? What techniques do you use to think of new things or to think of new questions about established things? Do you think what I've said has any relevancy to how your personal techniques work?

I think there is genuine creative thinking. A lot of music and literature was produced on psychedelics. Im pretty sure Mary Shelley was on heroin or something when she wrote Frankenstein, and its not hard to find music written under the influence (Beatles etc.)

Then there is "creative thinking" which is a term used by mushroom farmers* in business.

It doesnt really mean anything, its just from the arsenal of buzz words that they read in their marketing book at uni.

I dont really know what has been created whilst stoned, whether youre actually being more creative, or youre just more aware of your creative state. Things are hysterically funny when youre stoned, its not that the joke is any funnier, its just coz youre stoned.

We do slowly have our creative side killed off. I went to a grammar school (sick brag) so we were supposed to be the top 10% of the county. As such everything was geared towards academic subjects and things like Art and Music were just there because the curriculum demanded 1 hour per week.

It was drilled into our heads that these were of no importance and led to very little. There were very talented artistic/musical people at our school who never got any recognition for their talent, it was the opposite for maths and science. It was pretty sick looking back at how shit they treated us (Im talking about being teachers here, not other students)

I still have a deep hatred for almost every teacher I had at school. There is a lot that ive found out went on when I was there and it is really quite shocking what went.

When people get a job, theyre not required to think creatively, because creative thinking means you wont follow the protocol and guidelines and eventually youll fuck something up. A manager wants someone who follows script.

In the future though when we have robots to think and do all of our stuff, it may be that the only work required will be creative thinking and kids will take all sorts of drugs to come up with creative stuff to pass their tests

i believe the higher i am the more creative i am. almost all of us are intellectuals, which means we're already naturally deep thinkers;

thanks for the replies guys

nice thoughts byrnesam.. kind of interested in why you hate your teachers and what you learned later on. I usually think about a teacher I thought was crap or sub par with distaste but not hatred :D

This isn't blog worthy but its relevant and want to put it down somewhere:

An example of how "strategies for thinking" are important
My moneybelt is something I used it in Vegas to hold my bankroll, because its more secure than putting all that cash in my wallet or rubberband. I need it again, so I was trying to remember where it was. "Where is my money holder?" I thought to myself. "Where did I put that damn thing.. uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh....." and I couldn't remember. Today I was thinking, "I need somewhere to put my bankroll" and I instantly remembered where I stored my moneybelt.

I couldn't remember where I had put my moneybelt because I wasn't asking myself the right questions. When in Vegas, I never thought of it as my moneybelt but as my bankroll. This example is specifically relevant to memory recall, but I reckon that part of effective thinking in general is knowing to ask yourself questions.
