Hi all, long time lurker of liquid poker
Today I come to you guys with a question. How the hell do you make yourself determined to stop playing? I don't come here to seek compassion and pity because Ive lost all my money but rather, since I know some of you have probably been in the same spot at some time, I wanna know the best way to get the hell out of it!
So my story goes...
Back in April I had just finished my second year of uni in computer science. I live at home and therefore could pay off all of my schooling without getting any loans, I was looking forward to playing working full time at a semi-fine dining restaurant and playing starcraft2 all day and hopefully going on a trip at the end of summer. My bank account had 5 grand in it, I had enough for a trip and for going out about everyday after work. With some fellow co-workers I started going to the casino, i started playing blackjack and roulette, but hated them both because I was one of those people who always thought you cannot beat the house... So i started going to the poker room, it was entertaining and my money lasted me a lot longer than it did at blackjack and roulette. The trips to the poker room became more frequent and instead of playing 1-2 no limit i started playing 2-5 no limit where the average stack was 500-1000, most of you will see me as an idiot already (wtf are you doing playing with a 500-1k buy in with only 5k in your bankroll). But my work was good and i was making 100-150 a night in tips (5 days a week) since it was cash I was ending up going to the poker room every night... I bought books on poker, read a ton of internet articles, but surely enough that wasn't what i needed and I ended up losing all of my bankroll... This summer I ended up losing all of my revenue from work (around 7-8grand) and had about 1 grand of credit card debt... my dad was kind enough to have sympathy for me and bail me out of my CC debt if i promised to never go back... I of course broke that promise... at the end of summer i maxxed out my credit card (5grand) and ended up having to buy student loans to pay for this semester, Now i have to juggle a full course load in 3rd year computer science and a full time job... I managed to pay off a grand from my card, but with intrest accumulating it went back up to 4780 a few days after the deposit... I was about to make another payment of a grand but stupidly enough I went back to the poker room and lost it...
Now the worst part is... the casino is a 5 minute drive away from university, so if I even have any cash on me im tempted to go and spend it at the casino and even skip classes to do it...
So LiquidPoker What would be the best way to stop playing? as unlikely as it may sound I have had good days where I've won a ton and then either spent it or lost it later on.. with being in school and working full time poker seems like a sanctuary if i win helping me reduce that CreditCard Debt.

If it's all about playing poker, you can do it online playing micros. But if it is for the thrill of the gambling maybe as Zep put it, you should consider at least a call to gamblers anonymous or some kind of associations which deal with gambling addictions.

If your casino has one, go find the problem gambler rep an ask to be barred from the casino (and the rest in the city) for a year or how ever long you want. If you don't have one ask the pit manager of the poker room to do the same thing |

Complete opposite of me, I get so bored of playing live but I force myself to do it for the money.
Anyhow, even when people like you get decent at poker, you'll always have gambling issues. You'll ignore bankroll management and always get into gambling situations.
Do what above posters say and ban yourself from the casinos. |

all mental discipline, we can't help you change your way if you don't change your mindset. This is the first time i'm going school in a long time, i made a commitment of not playing poker until my courses was done. If you can't stick to a plan you lack discipline and find out what why.
Lets start at the basics
Why do you play poker? ask yourself question on why you play poker and how come you need poker so much.
-rush, make money, fun, bored nothing to do? and so on.
You didn't need to make money from poker since you had a decent job so it isn't about the money for you.
You had too much time and was bored, poker is a very time consuming game.
Poker gets the adrenaline going so it feels nice.

Pretty unhelpful to post this in OP's thread, wouldn't you think?
As for OP, keep gambling. Nobody cares if you lose more money except for yourself. Either wise up or get unfortunately get beat down. Only villain here imo are the debts that generate interest. Rich get richer really. |

Funny how much you remind me of myself when I began poker. http://www.liquidpoker.net/blog/viewblog.php?id=580178 After that I took it slow and small and ended up playing for a living for a year (Nl50-Nl100) and a half before I couldn't handle it anymore. Even funner is if you look at that comments - There is one referring to Neilly and here 3 years later people still making the same reference. Another similarity is I was also and a waiter at that time and just had moved out of my parent's after graduating high school and that's how I had the four grand to blow just as you did. |

I think this is the best post i've read in a long time. So much truth. I'm a long-term winner but to this day I am forced to play micro's 95% of the time do to gambling and discipline issues. Until you have enough discipline to put the urge of gambling behind you, don't play. Get other areas of your life figured out otherwise you'll just be like me which is a waste of fucking talent. |

Just ban yourself from the Casino's. If you're somehow a terrible enough player to actually lose at live poker you have no business being in the games. Actually on second thought, keep playing, play more. |

get staked by a gangster that will break your knee caps if you make bad decisions.
better dopamine rush alternatives to risking getting your knee caps broken by gangsters:
-fun, sociable, perfectly functional alcoholism. alcoholism that your doctor or squares wouldn't approve of but WINNING winners would. as long as you are getting your school work done and not spiraling out of control party on.
-speed+exercise. slamming a coffee and deadlifting or going for a run might not be as stimulating as playing a $5k pot but it's pretty good with a lot of positive benefits and there are no downsides like losing a $5k pot.
those 2 are a good start and balance each other out pretty well.
