20 pushups a day isn't going to help you at all.
You need to do as many regular pushups as you can to see what your limit is, then start doing sets of those everyday.
If you're able to do 20 at a time, then you should be moving up to 25-30 pushups within a month, but you have to push your muscles. Lets say 20 pushups is your max at one time, that's not all your body can handle for the day, it's only how much you can handle in one run. Keep doing sets of 20 with 3 minute breaks in between and eventually your chest muscles will just not be able to push up anymore and feel a little sore. Like the old saying goes, "feel the burn". Once you know your max amount of pushups you can do a day, then you can set a real schedule and goal for yourself.
I'm 6'0 and skinny for my height, but I do at least 100 pushups 4-5 days a week. I do two sets of 40 and one set of 20, depending how I feel I keep going. Depending on the day, I just keep doing more. I've been lazy lately and haven't pushed myself, I should have set a 200 push up goal for myself already. I used to be able to do 60 at one time when I was 14 years old.
You should also be able to do a set of 50 for example before and after you take a shower, the water helps your body.
Also, if all you're doing is pushups and not working out your chest in any other way, you can do pushups everyday, so don't listen to anyone who says you need to let your chest recover. Your body will tell you when you need a break, usually during the first 1-2 months you will need to take a day off or even two days off every other week, depending on weak you are. Once you've been doing it fore several months, you will get stronger and not need any breaks at all. But then if you don't need breaks, that means you're stronger than before and you need to increase your pushups and sets, or else you wont continue to get stronger.
