Poker in Scandinavia |

Hi,
I am an Icelandic poker player, who is active on your sister site(52.is) and come here regularly to learn more about poker. I don't really post here much, since most of you are a few leagues ahead of me.
I was wondering about poker games in Norway and Denmark, preferably Oslo or Copenhagen.
I just recently broke up with my gf of 4 years and I wanna follow my dream of playing poker, professionally or much more likely semi-professionally.
Where can I find some good live places to play. I am going to Copenhagen to visit my brother from 1.desember - 4th (maybe play one day) and thinking of moving after New Years, Oslo or Copenhagen.
I am mostly thinking about cash games since I mainly play cash game.
Also if anyone knows of lower division handball team, that might let me practice with them, that would be great as well.
Thanks a lot for the help!

I wouldn't go anywhere in Norway, unless you want to try and find "illegal" and home games to play. Poker isn't legalized in Norway, so there are no casino's for poker.
And also, if you want to pursue poker, I think it's smarter to move further down in Europe, cheaper to live, and you "earn more" by living there than in a country like Norway, Denmark and Sweden. Since everything is a lot more expensive here compared to the rest of Europe.
Unless you're beating 100nl with a fairly okay sample size, you'll earn more getting a normal job in Norway. I think if you get job as a garbage man (my brother did that recently for a year to grind up cash). You get around 22.000nok a month after taxes. (around 3800$ a month).

Copenhagen casino suck. Insane rake and bad atmosphere.
I would not recommend going to Sweden either. You should probably aim for a country that is cheaper. |

Alright, Thanks.
I am thinking about getting a normal job in Norway to earn some money. I have a friend who lives there. Wow that is alot of money for being a garbage man!!
To bad about Copenhagen casino, I kind of wanted to play while travelling, but it is probably better just to play here in Iceland. So if I decide to go for poker, I need to move somewhere like Spain?
Thank you so much for the info guys! I really appreciate it. |

Well you should go there yourself and check out while visiting your brother. You might like it, I just didn't.
However Spain just regulated poker (like Italy and France), so other options might be better. |

Italy would be best if you can find somewhere cheap to live there. Softest poker. |

$3.800 a month after taxes? Are you kidding me? Just looked it up on the web and its like €1.600 here in Holland before taxes. Are you saying income in Norway is double that of Holland? |

I think so, we pay more in taxes, living expenses so forth. But we still earn more, I've gotten told after everything is subtracted, you still have the most left over each month in Norway. Not sure if it's biased.
I also heard that a normal job like, picking strawberries, working at a factory etc. earns you more than being a doctor in some of the other countries in Europe.
I used the garbage example because I got shocked when I talked to a garbage man in England, they apparantly earn nothing, and they work 3-4 hours more every day. Ripoff!! |

Yeah well, it's not like Holland is tax heaven you know, and we aren't exactly the poorest country in Europe.
I know income and expenses in Norway are high, but I'm baffled by the magnitude of the difference, even with what is supposed to be one of the richer countries in the EU like Holland |

Being a garbage man in Poland would get you around $350. After paying rent and bills you wouldn't have enough money even for food.
In 2009 Polish doctors earned $1300 on average, heh. Paradise. |

that might be true that it's quite nice to live in Norway, but 2800 EUR for a garbage man after taxes seems excessive.
Unless garbage man is an euphemism for mafia killer.
Just found this
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090304204018AAj0NOp
where they say that 490k NOK is acceptable yearly salary for an Engineer (3 years ago)
This works out to 62k EUR or 83k USD. It seems high to me (German), but it's not off the charts like your garbage man example.
Is this completely wrong? |
