i guess he thought you'd triple barrel JT as well as worse hands?
Can you provide any thought process or insight into the hand? when i've played HU i've found myself getting called down on occasion by hand similar to this, but sometimes worse (i would open and villain would flat something like K9o, Q9o J9o, or 69o on a board like this without ever letting go

his range on this board is made up by basically pairs and mine is draws and monsters, turn and river are much better for me than for him
this runnout is so much better for me that allows me to have 2 bet sizes on the river ( not 100% confident in this conclusion )
im not sure if my play is correct with this hand since I have zillions of draws here to pick the best to bluff ( probably not because I have the J ), his call is good since he doesnt block my bluffs ( call with T9, J9 and Q9 wouldnt be good ) and blocks the backdoor flush, I've never done any simulation on this board so theres a big possibility that my assumptions are off
