I think deep this might be a cbet on flop to bloat the pot a bit if you hit, also just want to fold some high card that beat you.

I agree with that concept. Two reasons for the check.

1. I wanted to mix it up, and utilize overbets if necessary to get money in. I felt like betting this board could get me in a bunch of dicey situations that I'm not necessarily ready to blast stack off in.

2. A lot of broadway may not fold to a single bet and they have me crushed. I may even hang myself to a QK.

Checking is fine for sure.
Def if you get c/r here this sucks esp if it's big on flop. Your overbets on turn if you hit will have to be very large after a check so might get more folds than wanted, Part 2 I agree this is why it would generally be one cbet and then check behind very often unless you get this turn if I did it. But I like it with check too, just float turn at worst.
Pretty unfortunate result and he would probably have check raise flop with this.
