You did get unlucky, but I think your flop play was a little questionable.

First you overbet on your first bet. Which means that you get no action if all these limpers have uncoordinated high cards. Since there are so many people in the pot, and there is a flush draw, you want to bet more because the odds you intend to give may not be the odds that people later in the hand get (ie. some idiot calls your 3/4 pot bet, then the other limpers get good odds on the draws).

However unless people were calling rediculous amounts routinely at this table $1.50 should have been plenty.

Secondly you get reraised and now there is $6.50 in the pot. Then you raise making the pot $10.50. But you make it just $2 to him. You almost certainly have the best hand, and you want to play in such a way that he can make another mistake. Now you could call in hopes that he'd make a huge mistake on the turn, but since you chose to raise lets look at what you reraised.

You gave him 5:1 odds on that call.

But let's say that he's on a flush draw. Then he has 8 outs (2h gives you a boat). And he's only like a 4.5:1 dog to make that on the turn. So his call is profitable.

Lets say he has a premium pair. He's about 9:1 dog to make that by the river. So his $2 call is unprofitable. However it isn't the biggest mistake you could have him make: he'll certainly call more than just $2 and make an even bigger blunder.

Lets say he has two pair, because he thinks it's cute to limp "The Brunson." He has the same number of outs against you as the premium pair. (because getting trips on his 2 will give you the better house). But he'll make the same blunders that the premium pair made, and you can make even more off of him.

On balance I say you make it $8 to him, that kills the draw, and also allows him to make some pretty big blunders with other hands.

Note: In this case your play would have caused you to loose an even bigger pot. But 9 times out of 10 you would have won an even bigger pot. And you would have been slightly less worried about the flush draw on the turn if he was a competent player.

Good... Bad... Im the guy with the Gun.
