I didnt feel as though he was that strong coming off of the button. Small sample size, and now that I look back at the stats he only tried to steal 12% of the time. Im thinking this may have been a better spot to fold pre-flop.

3betting is fine here against the half stack, but defending is fine as well. When you 3bet here though you have to be prepared to stack off if he shoves, so calling is good. If his steal is only 12% though I would just defend this preflop. You can just check/call on a lot of flops like K72 since that doesn't hit his hand too much. A lot of the time guys just give up after you call one street when they have nothing. Bring your laptop to Larrys on Wed and I'll add more stats to your HUD which will help you determine when to 3bet better.

As for 3 betting against this half stack. The general rule of thumb is to never 3bet a half stack with a strong hand and then fold to a shove. 3betting him with 45s and folding to a shove is fine because our hand is only 5 high (That's just an example tho, I wouldn't 3bet this guy with 45s here). 3betting him with 99 and folding to a shove is terrible since we had good value. Basically if you 3bet and fold pre then you were just bluffing, and you don't want to bluff with hands like 99. So if you don't think you'd want to stack off pre then don't 3bet a half stack.

Against a full stack it is more ok to fold when 3betting with a strong hand, but not ok to fold when 4betting a strong hand.
