I was just afraid he had a low draw and something like a straight draw, where at best I'd only be able to split the pot, but yeah probably playing too nitty.

that doesn't even make sense... he can't have a made low or a made straight, so the absolute top of his range is to have those two draws and with one card to come that still doesn't give him much equity. There is literally no hand you are behind and the existence of potential draws like that is precisely why you need to put more money in on the turn rather than the river.
