No I mean my opponent didn't know the rules which is why I was capping. You generally don't want to be capping without a 2 in your hand, and this is why. |

Yeah, that is what I have been learned, that I should only play hands when I start with 7 and 2 |

That's not exactly true, there are plenty of hands you can play without a 7 and 2 depending on player behavior and implied odds. For instance, if the table isn't crazy about going to the river every hand, a pat 97643 can just be played as a pat 9 to the river. In some multiway pots, a 2-card draw with 865 or even a 3-card draw with something like 52 is fine.
And of course, you have to be a lot more lax if you feel like playing heads-up. If you're not really confident yet, do try to start with a 2 in your hand if it's not a pat 9 at least, but the 7 isn't really important, because it's actually preventing you from getting a good 86 low. Not that you should usually be dropping a 7 from your hand, of course, just that you don't need a 7 in your hand to play it. |
