Engage has bad english so I assume he means to say: the only possible way to make EV would be to bet, BUT if you don't fold out enough of his range then it is -EV to bet, so checking would be better. If you bet 1/2 pot ($3.5) he has to fold x% lets solve for the breakeven case ( =$0 ) for a bet in this spot. ....win...........lose +(x%)$7 -(100%-x%)$3.5 = $0 can solve for x but I am lazy, so I am going to plug in numbers, lets try x = 30% (if he folds 30% of the time here) +(30%)$7 -(100%-30%)$3.5 = ? +(30%)$7 -(70%)$3.5 = ? +$2.1 - $2.45 = -$0.35 Losing 35c, So he has to fold more than like 35% of the time at least for a 1/2pot bet to be profitable   Last edit: 20/12/2011 15:12
