This happened to me before on my last semester at Univ.

I was on huge life-tilt at the time (no excuse to cheat obv). I took a lower division class I didn't need for fun since I already filled out all the requirements to graduate. I already knew pretty much everything they were teaching and rolled through the midterms easily. Then on Finals (funny enough, this class was my very last final and I had already walked), I encountered a multiple choice problem that I couldn't remember the answers to so in a stroke of retardation, I took out my phone and tried to cheat. I'm still not sure why I did this since I probably would've still gotten an A in the class anyways and I didn't actually need the grade regardless. Long story short, some probable Freshmen guy and a girl decided to tell the T.A and then write to the professor about me scrimmaging through my phone. Afterwards, I had to go through multiple Student Judicial Affair meetings and talked to the professor. Thankfully, the professor and the SJA understood that I absolutely do not need the credit or the grade for the class and decided to give me a community service hours (lol) + F for the class instead of a suspension.

I can't make excuses b/c I did cheat obviously. But I was under pretty big psychological stress about other shit in my life and did something retarded that wouldn't have help or hurt me regardless of outcome. What I'm saying is sometimes consequence of the action could be a lot greater than the significance of the action itself.

We obviously don't know his story. He could easily not deserve the extent of punishment he might receive if you report the guy to the professor. If it really bothers you I think the best course of action is to confront him about it and observe his reaction. I'm sure you can figure out your next move from there.

Basically, try your best to not be "that guy".

For all those people saying cheating is bad, or cheating doesn't matter because everyone else does or lastly the talk of super advanced cheating. One of the biggest things about going to University is to learn to think for yourself even if most courses are garbage study guides/cheat sheets/memorization. You learn to figure out wtf is important, that is bullshit, what matters to you and how the world really works.

There was a study that taking the time to cheat/devise a strategy to cheat/get better grades can have as much Positive impact on your learning/development as those of you who are "bookworm super studiers"

I have learned from poker that being at the table is not a grind, the grind is living and poker is how I pass the time

An almost identical situation:
What if you were 100% sure him and a friend were colluding in poker at a table you were at? They are breaking the rules in order to benefit at the expense of you and the rest of the people at the table (because you said the class was competitive and the relative grades make a difference). I would guess that most people here would do something about that, although I could be wrong (and I personally don't know what I would do in either situation).

This is also removing the idea that he might do damage to someone if he ends up with a medical degree that he shouldn't have.

wtf why do so many of you need to cheat in school ??

with all the resources available nowadays it's pretty simple to not cheat and do well.

.... nobody likes a snitch but if this guy is going to be super obvious about cheating then try to claim in front of a bunch of people that the stuff is easy i'd definitely call him out in the group and make him look bad in front of everybody. would never "tattle" to the teacher though, that's a bitch move.
