This seems pretty relevant to all poker players and according to the linked NYT article, the answer is yes, sitting too much will kill you.

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/04/17/mag..._r=4&src=me&ref=homepage&

Couple of quotes from the article:

"The men in the study who spent six hours or more per day of their leisure time sitting had an overall death rate that was about 20 percent higher than the men who sat for three hours or less."

"Another study, published last year in the journal Circulation, looked at nearly 9,000 Australians and found that for each additional hour of television a person sat and watched per day, the risk of dying rose by 11 percent."

Isn't the risk of dying 100% anyway

My work is of high quality, cheap and fast. Pick only two of those though.

One more:

"Sitting, it would seem, is an independent pathology. Being sedentary for nine hours a day at the office is bad for your health whether you go home and watch television afterward or hit the gym. It is bad whether you are morbidly obese or marathon-runner thin. “Excessive sitting,” Dr. Levine says, “is a lethal activity.”"

if you smart asses prefer we could say something like "the more time you spend sitting, the more likely you are to die at an age sooner than average" instead

It's no surprise that people who live an active lifestyle live longer than people who don't live an active lifestyle right? Watching tv or sitting won't hurt you, but they are indicative of an unhealthy lifestyle.

Yeah that's what you'd think but according to the studies in the article it's not just a correlation. Regarding "watching tv or sitting won't hurt you", I can't say anything about TV but according to the article and it's studies sitting itself will hurt you and that's kind of the major point and why I found this worth posting.

"The study author David Dunstan wanted to analyze whether the people who sat watching television had other unhealthful habits that caused them to die sooner. But after crunching the numbers, he reported that “age, sex, education, smoking, hypertension, waist circumference, body-mass index, glucose tolerance status and leisure-time exercise did not significantly modify the associations between television viewing and all-cause . . . mortality.”"

like
I work manually and don't sit at all during work
I have two dogs and walk them for a good while every day
I do tons of cross country skiing during winter (440 kilometers this season!) and I try to play football during summer.

but I still sit at least 6 hours every day. doesn't matter how social I am, if I go out to or with buddies then I'm still gonna be sitting. and this is the most active I've ever been since childhood and prolly the most active I'm ever gonna be - I'm currently in awesome shape. but I don't get how I'm supposed to reduce sitting to less than 6 hours through the day. like am I just supposed to stand? or does a couch where you're not really sitting work?

cause I mean ok obviously a really sedentary life is bad and obviously spending 14 hours a day sitting is bad for you. but does anyone here NOT sit 6 hours per day?

op those quotes make the article look like it's a silly correlation=causation fallacy.

tldr: even if you don't exercise, taking lots of individual movements every day, like walking up and down stairs to get food will dramatically decrease your chances of becoming a fatty.
individual movements can be as simple as tying your shoelaces.

Ok so this article is a warning to any SNE bots that use pee bottles and have food by their desk

^any movement is much healthier
even swaying back and forth is better than nothing
just staying absolutely still is what's bad for you

". Working late one night at 3 a.m., Dr. Levine coined a name for the concept of reaping major benefits through thousands of minor movements each day: NEAT, which stands for Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis. In the world of NEAT, even the littlest stuff matters. McCrady-Spitzer showed me a chart that tracked my calorie-burning rate with zigzagging lines, like those of a seismograph. “What’s that?” I asked, pointing to one of the spikes, which indicated that the rate had shot up. “That’s when you bent over to tie your shoes,” she said. “It took your body more energy than just sitting still.”
"

this was known for a while though, not sure what new the study found

Its fairly common knowledge that sitting for long period of times deteriorates your muscles which provide support for organs.

This study makes sense but I think they should mention that the group of men who sat for 6 hours likely had almost no form of physical exercise compared to the other group.

Floofy   Canada. Apr 13 2013 14:56. Posts 8708

Stupid question.

Let's say you don't have the choice to sit for 3 hours (class for example). Is there any ways to make it less harmfull? For example, moving my legs or whatever.

Btw, i clearly do way more than 6 hours, i def need to get a better life style =(

james9994: make note dont play against floofy, ;(

Smuft   Canada. Apr 13 2013 17:58. Posts 633

It doesn't say exactly but I think 6 hours a day is way below average amount of sitting per day. According to the study 10 hours is the average for obese people and so we can say that 8 hours is probably about average.

"In a motion-tracking study, Dr. Levine found that obese subjects averaged only 1,500 daily movements and nearly 600 minutes sitting. In my trial with the magic underwear, I came out looking somewhat better — 2,234 individual movements and 367 minutes sitting. But I was still nowhere near the farm workers Dr. Levine has studied in Jamaica, who average 5,000 daily movements and only 300 minutes sitting."

So,

6 hours = good
8 hours = average
10 hours = obese

There are some standing / adjustable desks out there that will go to a preset heights at the push of a button; one for sitting, and one for standing.

this was my first thought.

i think the article is pretty questionable. even very active people sit for quite a bit of their day if they are involved in rowing/cycling for their primary exercising.

I don't think this counts as sitting the article talks about.

"This is your body on chairs: Electrical activity in the muscles drops — “the muscles go as silent as those of a dead horse,” Hamilton says — leading to a cascade of harmful metabolic effects. Your calorie-burning rate immediately plunges to about one per minute, a third of what it would be if you got up and walked."

So biking is not sitting + exercising it is just biking and the same with rowing.

Well then that is my whole thing, it's not the sitting that is the problem, but the utter idleness. Unless somehow laying down isn't the same problem. I think it's clear just standing upright and still takes more muscle use than sitting down..
