Origin of Gutshot

I always assuming a gutshot was named because of the missing card in the middle of the straigh... and called gut for its location.
however in live poker, one friend who has not really even played poker tarted to argue that its called like this because it requires some guts to play it.
This was pissing me off since he barely have played 20 live game and all his poker knowledge is from our homegame, but I was unable to argue back since I dont know for sure.
So add your explanation.

I think its derived from being hit in the gut aka the middle of ur body, when u hit a gutshot you hit your middle card etc... also when someone hits it against you its alot like someone punching you in the gut

Thinking that all poker names has a reason. As beein mentioned here earlier

And some one called him a cheater and shot him hititng middle of the cards. and then the gut of his body. Hence the name gut shot straight. as in A8 beein Dead mans hand. because the guy got shot holding A8

My friend at my home game use to call it a "gun shot." As for exactly why it's called "gut-shot" is beyond me, I'd probably say the same thing you'd say. When you hit a "gutter ball" it's a good thing, and when someone hits it against you it's bad. Weird how that works huh?

when is hitting a "gutter ball" a good thing? In bowling a gutter ball is horrible. Or are you not talking about bowling.

to make a gutshot straight you have to hit it right in the middle duh

I dont know, gunshot seems more logical. Its a cool term and you know... texas... guns and stuff. Everyone I know calls it gunshot and I "hear" the guy of WSOP saying gunshot, but I guess Im just wrong about that.

I thought its origin was, inside straight-->accuracy-->gun accuracy etc.

I realise that in all probability gutshot is the "correct" term. But seriously, its slang, who cares what the etymology is... If you actually have a huge problem with me (aka scourge of society) using 'gunshot' you need your head examined.

Im not going to bother trying to explain to my real life friends that its "gutshot" because it doesnt matter at all. I personally like gunshot more, and thats almost certainly because Im more used to it.
