I think that under the right circumstances, humor can be a healthy way of approaching great tragedies, and this is a point I've seen jews themselves make with some frequency. But if you are gonna make a joke about something deeply tragic, it becomes much more important that this joke is really, really funny, and I don't think /pol/ memes are there, ever.

Baal was banned from TL almost 10 years ago (one of very few posters with a 5 digit post count to be permed), and is a moderator here. I'm not a moderator here, but I am one there. Suffice to say, the policies of the sites differ greatly.

Probably because TL.net has an interest in its own survival as an actual community. Not that I agree with a number of their excesses (I also got perma banned for posting a torrent site a long time ago) but when you are interested in having a community you have to have some kind of standards of decency.

The only places that have experimented with having little to no standards degenerated in echo chambers for the far-right, or have been complete failures like Jordan Peterson's pay-to-access "free speech" platform, or they slowly died, as this website has done. When you don't believe in such things as communities, and you only believe in the reality of the individual, and what restricts them, you can't build anything of lasting value.

I have no problem with people using humor to cope with the tragedies of life. I wouldn't be here if I hadn't done this consistently. I have a problem with people imposing some normative standard of what is emotionally healthy to laugh at though, especially when it comes with the implied belief that there is no such thing as taking things too far or spreading memes that benefit a very clearly racially divisive message. Contrary to what libertarian individualists will tell you, we actually do live in a society. One that has seen a rise in xenophobic and racist violence. It's not something healthy to trivialize.

Here's just one example from my country taken from wikipedia: "Chinese-Canadian businesses in Vancouver have reported a drop in business ranging from 50 to 70 percent. In the Greater Toronto Area, Chinese restaurants have reported a drop in sales ranging from 30 to 80 percent."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xenopho..._2019%E2%80%9320_coronavirus_pandemic

You'd think that someone who believes in the free market and meritocracy wouldn't try to harm small businesses by encouraging prejudice against them, but I guess it's too much to expect out of someone like Baal to be aware of such things or to care about anything beyond what brings him pleasure.

Do you really want to find something that works? Doesn't seem like it tbh

Basic moral intuition plus talking to a sponsor, therapist, friends is where I am at and it works pretty well. My focus is simply on being useful. "Let Thy will be done" whatever the fuck that means.

In some languages there is no word for "God" so it is translated as "Love." That sounds about right.

Yeah, I was going to mention this earlier. The only place to buy rice in my area atm is a super legit Asian market that is THE place to go for Asian cooking but these racist idiots condemn the place. I mean it's the only place I can get Chinese eggplant and good mangoes among other things but these idiots would rather starve than shop there. While one of my friends works at a "Western" grocery store and they are booming along at 160% sales compared to last year.

I'm not saying it died because of moderation. I'm saying it died because it never really cared about community; in fact it couldn't care about community. Community was only ever going to be instrumental and subservient to making profit, and there was nothing that linked its members together outside the desire to generate more profit for oneself. It served as a nexus for "self-interested agents seeking to pursue their subjectively-defined ends optimally". People left because they didn't feel like they were leaving a community: they didn't feel like their presence meant anything, and they felt like whatever investment of time they'd put into this site wasn't going to provide a good return on their investments.

The only moderator that's left is someone with anti-social tendencies for whom the communal is anathema and I'm saying this is no coincidence. The moderation is quite simply representative of the place. And these are traits that a society focused on individual achievements and profit-seeking reproduces and rewards, and always so at the expense of sociality and sustainability.

It would just be a poker forum if it didn't have a General section to discuss non-poker things. I stopped playing 10 years ago. Drone probably stopped earlier than that. We're still posting. But I've stopped posting for some periods before and I am always reticent to post and don't find much value in doing so.

There are still a number of people who come here for non-poker related reasons, they just don't contribute, because it's not worth it to them. Look at the upper right side of the website and you can see active versus logged in users. There's 35 to 40 times more people who lurk than there are who might post. And most of them are very unlikely to be coming for poker content, since there's pretty much just the occasional Stroggoz hands to come for.

yeah there are a large number of russian bots and ideal poker salesmen and dogmeat who lurk wow such untapped resource of burgeoning community

loco makes a point. we have too few users here. what we need is more moderators who can ban some of them, thereby giving us a larger userbase which will surely result in a quality forum like teamliquid.net or reddit

right now there is only one moderator with anti-social tendencies. q.e.d. i recommend we also make loco a moderator so we have twice the anti-socialness

Nowhere was I suggesting that there was something to be done to revive or transform this website. Nor that it could have been something else with different moderation. It was an observational comment, not a prescriptive one. And the thing to decry about neoliberal individualist pseudo-communities has nothing to do with the quantity of users but the quality of them (and the quality of their relationships).

Anyway, moving on from that topic, some light-hearted fun:
